Trivial pursuits.

All my life I avoided Dr. Pepper because even though I liked the taste, I thought it was inferior in caffeine content. And I likes my soda pop with a bit of zing to it.

Little did I know that I have been shunning it unfairly...

While it's lower on the heart-go-'splodey totem pole than the citrus-flavored champs like Mountain Dew and Mello Yello, it's still well ahead of Coke and Pepsi.

In other news, Coke appears to have discontinued my beloved Vault Zero. This makes me sad. How am I supposed to get my heart palpitating and stumbling in the morning if I can't wash my coffee down with that sweet, sweet caffeinated energy drink?

  1. What you need to do is wash these down with the coffee then the sweet, sweet caffeinated energy drink.

But I do have to throw in a Heinlin cautionary quote:

Be wary of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors and

  2. So they're still making Jolt? Cool.

  3. We used to sell as much Jolt as quickly we could obtain it in the coffeehouse days. Distribution was spotty even then. Probably worse now that it's been taken over by the receiver.

  4. Dang. My favorite cola-like synthetic, diet cherry Coke, is way down. It's not that different from Dr. Pepper in taste.

I can't even begin to count how many bike rides were powered by Diet Code Red Dew, though.

  6. Dr. Pepper is okay, but I'm more of a Mr. Pibb guy.

Not a huge fan of the Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper...some things are not meant to be.

Truth be told, if calories didn't matter, there would be nothing but RC Cola in my house...

  7. Ah, yes, there is little that can compare with carbonated prune juice in the morning...

However, may I submit that the path to Nirvana lies in the way of Diet Pepsi Wild Cherry. If they don't have that in Heaven then I ain't going! (The ex- said that I don't have anything to worry about--wonder what she meant by that??!?)

  8. Tam Tam Tam, they used to market Dr. Pepper like they do Red Bull and the other energy drinks of today.

  9. PS, some folk even drink it warm, my mom & dad's neighbor back in the day had an old percolator that she kept Dr Pepper in. Mom found out the hard way when she thought it was coffee.

  10. Last time I checked, diet Dr. Pepper had the caffeine content actually printed on the can, which is pretty handy.

  11. There's "Dr. Pepper" and then there is "Dr. Pepper". The authentic original is bottled in Dublin TX and made with real cane syrup rather then the corn syrup dextrose used in most soft drinks. We keep most of the Dublin stuff in the state and export just a bit to Oklahoma to keep them pacified and at home.

  12. Dr. Pepper RULES if you grew up in the Southwest... :-) I still drink it today!

  13. SUNDROP!! 63mg per 12oz.
    DIET SUNDROP!! 69mg per 12oz.
This should be the Tennessee state soft drink, although I seem to remember it being hard to find in Knoxville when I was in school in mid '70s. Hopefully that's changed. I don't know if it's available in Indy tho. Been starting the day with it since the late '60s.

  14. Sundrop is now available in the Phoenix area. Happy times indeed.

Now if I can just get someone to import Cheerwine...

  15. Try a Monster(tm) coffee drink. I like the irish blend. It's in a funky green can. Cold.

  16. It's all part of the grand plan, controlling the people.
I drank TAB for years. Caffeine-mmm.
Then they brought out Diet Coke, and cut back on TAB production.
I bought a couple two-liter bottles and squirreled them away.
(AS my then-wife) didn't drink, I brought them out, as fine wine, on our anniversary, Vintage TAB!
Of course, by then, we'd become accustomed to Diet Coke.
    Fiends!
(and Now, I'm addicted to Coke Zero, with less caffeine than Diet Coke!)
    Fiends!

  18. Ed, I can go around the corner to the Publix supermarket and get Dr. Pepper with cane sugar.

More importantly, I can go to Sam's and get a case of Coco-Cola with sugar in glass bottles.

  19. Oh, and I forgot- If you like Diet Dew, try to find what's left of the supplies of Diet Mtn Dew Supernova and Ultraviolet. Mmmm....super sweet caffeine goodness.

  23. Always did like me so Dr. Pepper -- when they brought out the "classic," with real sugar, I went through a couple of the big boxes in as many months. (For me, that's a lot).

Cheerwine is one of the treats we can bicycle over to Locally Grown Gardens and buy right outta their cooler. Ahhh!

  27. Dr. Pepper is my poison of choice. When you grow up in Texas and you grow up in Dallas, Texas, Dr. Pepper is ~the~ choice. Dr. Pepper is in fact the official soft drink of the city of Dallas and the Texas State Fair.

I actually always wondered if there was a difference in caffeine content between soft drinks...educational.
