Jackboots and labcoats...

Boy, the Food & Drug Administration has been strutting their regulatory stuff lately, haven't they?

I mean, no sooner do they get regulatory authority over cigarettes than they demand that the tobacco companies change the names of their products, tell them what color to make the logos, and then order them to print pictures of cadavers on the boxes.

Raw milk raids, the atrocious Food Safety Act, and now the decision to crack down on purveyors of natural nutritional supplements? These clipboard-wielding Pointdexters are flexing their regulatory muscle like a young Ahnold in a banana hammock. (And if that doesn't impress you, then they'll just sic their very own machinegun-toting federal SWAT team on you. Sieg health!)

At this rate, everybody's going to be so busy stockpiling 100-watt bulbs and glucosamine tablets that they won't have any room for ammunition... Which might be the plan, actually.

  1. No, I'll just add on. I'll call it the "DaddyBear Memorial Ammo Bunker and Wine Cellar".

  2. Check on the glucosamine. I'll have to stock up.

I'm curious if any of the smokers out there are looking to grow their own in the near future.

  3. Glucosamine tablets? Now all they have to do is crack down on gold advertising and they can finally silence right-wing talk radio.

  4. There's always room for more ammo.

  5. More laws, errrr, regulations, less justice.

Soon the black market will have as many aisles as the WallyMart.

Is it just me, or does the name "natural nutritional supplements" bring to mind hippies and nature freaks? In my experience, hippies and nature freaks tend to be liberals/progressives. Now tell me again why the hell these people still support this (freedom hating) administration?

I would think the would like a more... anarcho-capitalist view where the only thing that the natural nutritional supplement companies would have to prove that what it says on the bottle really IS what is in the bottle and that it isn't poisonous (unless clearly marked on the bottle as such).

Shouldn't people be allowed to buy and sell whatever it is that they WANT to buy and sell?

Shhhhh..... You'll give my plan away.

    Stuart -

It's busybody syndrome where those who can't get their own life together feel the need to tell everyone else how to live theirs.

  10. There is already a big black market for cigarettes. But those are factory made. Only a matter of time before people stare growing their own tobacco. Some will also start selling it just like weed.
Give me 10 cigs and 5 joints.

  11. And speaking of the black market for smokes, guess who's feeding it: http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2010/01/government_undercover_agents_p.html

That's right, ATF! Guns, smokes...somebody let me know when they start passing out Scotch.

  12. It's not the administration, it's the bureaucracy. If I run the FDA I measure my power by my budget, if I don't continue to expand my budget my power stagnates. If I ever actually solve a problem then my budget goes down.

What incentive is there for a government functionary to actually solve the issue they are assigned to?

Maybe we put federal offices in downtown Detroit and make the officials take public transit to work from the city limits. With multiple transfers.

WV: Skindums... hehehe... too many options.

  13. Well, the Ye Olde Skool Survialist/Preppers always used the Mantra "Beans, Bullets and Band Aids" in terms of Priority Shopping, but if you want to change the order to suit your individual situation, feel free. Just don't leave a Category completely empty, because as some smart Lady recently posted about "Doom" and "Gloom"....

  14. Now tell me again why the hell these people still support this (freedom hating) administration?

Simple: In their minds, all good comes from blue; all evil from red. The left-wing propaganda machine ensures this is only what they hear.

  15. Tam, just curious...

How many FDA storm-troopers does it typically take to raid and subdue an Amish dairy farmer armed with a pitchfork and a pitcher of illegal milk?

That's "shock and awe", come home to roost!

    Dann in Ohio,

"How many FDA storm-troopers does it typically take to raid and subdue an Amish dairy farmer armed with a pitchfork and a pitcher of illegal milk?"

I grew up in Rural Central Illinois where the Amish are fairly abundant. If my experience with them is any inducation, it will never happen. One of the many things the Amish are excellent at is OpSEC. We all know they drink illegal raw milk, but they aint talkin! It's like they don't trust outsiders or something.

  20. People are already growing their own tobacco, and publicly too, there was an article about some lady in NYC doing it not to long back.

Stuart: they have already raided some of the Amish for it. I'll have to see if I can dig up the articles again, but apparently they started selling the raw stuff "underground" and the news caught word, which was the end of that cause once the news printed the .gov had to step in!

  22. Tobacco can be grown in a variety of environments (didja know it's still grown commercially in Connecticut?). The catch is that it wears out the soil. Needs a lot of fertilizer. However, it can be grown successfully.

  23. "Shouldn't people be allowed to buy and sell whatever it is that they WANT to buy and sell?"

Yeah. That worked GREAT for Thalidomide. High (Flipper) Five on that one...

    ReplyDelete
  24. ...and yet they still sell arsenic.

We should put a stop to that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. (Less sardonically, there's Civil Law for a reason. As a matter of fact, in response to the "But... but... but thalidomide!" thing, Thalidomide is in fact being prescribed again in other countries. However, due to its teratogenic effects, it is not for use by those who are pregnant or who might become pregnant. Just like a lot of other drugs.)

    Nice straw man.

There is a huge differance between a manufactured drug and a natural food suplement. As much as they look like drugs (pills etc), natural food suplements are more like food.

This FDA ruling is more akin to making Mrs Jone's frozen home-made meatball company completely shut down for 75 days because they decided to add a little more garlic to their meatballs to make them more "Italian" (which sucks because they already have too much garlic anyway, stupid fake Italians). During which they have to independantly RE-certify that every single ingredient is safe even though mankind has been eating that stuff for like a million years or so.

I suspect that the FDA is just crabby that the natural food suplement companies have gotten away with putting "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease" on their bottles and the FDA wasn't getting to stick their busy body regulatory noses in as much as they wanted (and therefore wasn't getting as big a budget).

What will they go after next? Cheese? Lunchmeats? ooh... GRANOLA BARS! Face it, there is a lot of weird stuff in granola bars!

WV: boozze HOW DOES IT KNOW IT'S ME?!?!!
