Overheard on the phone...

While passing through Amarillo, the phone rang. It was Shootin' Buddy...
SB: "Are you still in Texas?"

Me: "Yup."

SB: "Is everybody wearing funny hats and pointy elf boots?"

Me: "Nope."

SB: "Then how can you tell you're in Texas?"

Me: "There're Texas flags everywhere."

SB: "But that could just mean you're in a steak house in Wisconsin."

  1. But I don't think Wisconsin has Texas flags and/or symbols on ALL of the overpasses :-)

  2. And the car dealerships. And the county, state, and local office buildings. And the front lawns (very often without national flags).

While I'm sure that they know our flag, I don't even know what Wisconsin's flag looks like.

  3. The sad thing is that, by-and-large, state flags in the USA really stink.

They are graphically mushy and over-complex.

    All the good flags have
    A. Few colours
    B. Simple graphics

Old glory verges on violating B, but luckily if you omit even 1/2 the stars & bars it's still recognizable.

Anything with a complex state crest is useless.

  4. There's a jumbled mess of a shield, a couple guys, and a badger on a blue field... at least that's the ten cent description.

  5. Badgers? I got yer' stinkin' Badgers!

Just had dinner at the Texas Roadhouse in Madison the other night,too... (not a good place for kids w/peanut allergies, I might add!)

  6. Used to be a bar here in Richmond called the Texas-Wisconsin Border Cafe.

I like Texas's flag a lot. My own Commonwealths is the best of course, Sic Semper Tyrannis being a most appropriate motto. I always had a fondness for Ohio's oddly shaped one.

  7. I live in Minnesota and have no idea what kind of flag Wisconsin has next door. Minnesota's is one of those overly complex ones, The state seal on a field of blue, with a motto in French.

  8. If you can open the window and smell where the steak was raised, you're in Amarillo. If y'all have the time the next time you pass through, I'd love to buy each of a bosmara steak at a fantastic local steakhouse.

  9. Texas flags? They don't have enough flag poles to fly all the flags of countries that have run the place.

You can always tell a Texan, you just can't tell him much.

If the car dealerships are an indication, it must mean I live in Mexico now.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.

  11. I have never been in any state that you'd see as many state flags as Texas.

    So I moved here.

TN and IN have pretty good ones. I don't even know what GA's looks like now...

  13. Texas Roadhouse is based in Indiana -- well, they tried calling it "Indiana Roadhouse" first, but Patrick Swayze kept fighting these other guys, and it was bad for business.
