Two years ago, Brian J. Noggle joked about starting an Urban Chicken Rescue Organization, to take care of the little egg factories that had been purchased by well-meaning yuppies who discovered that anything much more maintenance-intensive than a Pug or a Prius didn't fit well with their lifestyle, no matter how many eggs it laid.
Today, the difficulty of parody in this modern world has yet again been illustrated, as Poe's Law comes to Portland.
.
Yuppie friends of mine tried the urban chicken thing. After finding out what a pecking order really is, they lost interest.
ReplyDeleteThe urban chickens currently in most need of rescue (or at least compensation) from Americans seem to reside in Cartagena.
ReplyDeleteMy mind! My mind! A veritable Noggle-boggle!
ReplyDeleteDirty Jobs did a segment in Miami with the Chicken Patrol; apparently there's so many wild chickens they're becoming a real problem.
ReplyDeleteI always wind up remembering that line that "...the only thing she liked about chickens was the way they tasted fried."
Actually, Pugs are pretty maintenance-intensive, or at least veterinarian-expensive, as dogs go.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to New Hampshire.
My daughter wanted to raise quail for a 10th grade science project. I was saved/restricted from what might have been an interesting experience by following my HOA rules.
ReplyDeleteChickens - bigger, meaner pigeons, who poop more, bark louder and peck harder.
I remember my parents having Bantams when I was a kid. The roosters were some mean little bastards, and attacked me a lot.
ReplyDeleteHere in the islands, the Urban Chicken Rescue Militia is armed with cookpots.
ReplyDeleteWhat RL said. I've got a "home" for unwanted chickens called The Skillet Arms.
ReplyDeleteHeh,heh. Chicken retirement. But furgit the frying pan, everybody _KNOWS_ the proper home for an older clucker iz a stew-pot! (or a nice braize). B-) yum. JohninMd(help)
ReplyDeleteHot tubs and curry rubs.
ReplyDelete;^)
I keep telling you people, "Portlandia" is a documentary.
ReplyDeleteThese are the same type of people who back in the 70s were pounding nails into trees to stop harvesting, in the 80s were buying Franklin stoves, then outlawed them in the 90s as smelly polluters, and now want to use "renewable" wood (except for paper or construction) again.
ReplyDeleteIam Director of Florida Home for Battered Chickens. Please send any abused chickens to:
ReplyDeleteBeach Road Chicken Dinners
4141 Atlantic Blvd.
Jacksonville, Fl 32211
Please feel free to stop by to see how they're doing.
Hey! None of that, now. Providing for the retirement of chickens is not for amateurs or the faint of heart.
ReplyDeleteJust send them my way. I've got a perfect place for chickens to spend their sunset minutes. Chickens are always welcome here, because I love them. So do the boys.
Yummy, yummy chickens. With paprika and onions.
@Yardbird:
ReplyDeleteI loves me some Beach Road. I can eat those creamed peas all day (and they'd let me).
If only I didn't leave two ex-wives with expensive and industrious lawyers in Jacksonville.
