Tab Clearing...

  1. Regarding the truck of ammunition.

It seems pretty obvious that there is no criminal intent. Not that Mexico law has much need of that when there is a bribe to a judge that could be potentially gleaned.

He was apprehended trying to drive the ammunition OUT of Mexico.

Life is tough. Life is tougher if you are stupid.

  3. Four Hueys will fit on the helipad at Site R. Not so much at Weather Mountain. And, Ft. Richie really is neat although the helipad sits on the nine hole golf course. Ask how I know. regards, Alemaster

  4. That truck driver story really annoys the shit out of me. Just some guy trying to make his living driving stuff around, and even if it required excessive incompetence to accidentally go to Mexico, it's not like it was his stuff.

  5. Perlhaqr,
As I recall, all it takes is a single wrong turn to end up on the bridge of no return to Mexico. The only place to turn around is on the other side of the border.

  6. Unknown:

He had the option of just parking the truck in traffic, and turning his blinkers on.

Getting the truck back from the El Paso impound yard, and paying a fine for obstructing traffic would have been a heck of a lot cheaper than driving it into Juarez.

The driver was a recent immigrant. He had no clue how much trouble he could get into for crossing that bridge with ANY undeclared cargo, let alone ammunition.

  7. Hell, literally. You can get caught in the twisty-tawdry freeway-maze of EastBay cloverleafs and wind up on the Bay Bridge with no recourse but to PAY A TOLL and cross over to San Francisco. It's like being caught between Hell and Hell since the other side is Oakland.

  8. DirtCrashr: Yeah, did that once, while towing a 1966 Cadillac Ambulance behind a full sized pickup truck on a tow-dolly.

A.) I really didn't want to be trying to maneuver that 60+ foot long conglomeration in SFO.

B.) They charge by the axle. So I got to pay lots and lots extra for the privilege of the trip.

Fortunately, I was able to use Treasure Island as a turnaround point, instead of heading into the City proper.

  9. Unknown: Sorry, my position wasn't necessarily that it required excessive incompetence to make that wrong turn, but rather that even if that was to blame, it still shouldn't be the sort of thing that costs a man 25 goddamn years in the pokey.

But then, I suppose there's lots of things like that.

  10. How do you say mens rea in Latin American?

"No tengo mas dinero! Usted ya tiene todo mi dinero!" is my best guess....

  11. Thinking back to Newt Gingrich's comment about how we should be pushing 2A at other countries because it's a human right (I almost can't believe I just typed that, but it's ok, I know he was just being a votewhore), it's shame we don't use all the money we give away as the same sort of fucking bludgeon we use against our own states w.r.t. "interstate highway funds", etc, to get laws (that I want) passed.

  12. At first I thought the tab to Site R would take me to the secret hideout under Area 51 where hundreds of space aliens have been guarded by our military for the past 60+ years.

Then I discover the link takes me to the place at the end of the secret tunnel in my backyard in western Washington directly to my secret hideout at Raven Rock.

I can understand that VPs Cheney and Biden are incapable of keeping secrets of this sort, but I expected more from Tam and Roberta X.

  14. For no obvious reason, that last link reminded me strongly of a certain story told of, by, and about a certain Legal Canine...

  15. If you are westbound on I-10 in El Paso, there is a 3-4 lane left exit going to Juarez. And the traffic is always heavy so it is easy to get sucked in there. Right response is to stop on the bridge and put your hood up.

  16. perlhaqr - a '66 Caddibulance on a tow-dolly is a fearsome long-thing Downtown, but also on Treasure Island!
