So Roomie has me quasi-hooked on antique malls. I find them fascinating because I had no idea that if I'd saved all the Fisher-Price toys from my childhood, I'd be one of those millionaires that Chris Hayes hates on MSNBC of a weekend morn.
Anyhow, I saw this statuette in the one in Westfield, IN today. The hanging tag read "Tribute To NYFD Firefighters On 9/11". While the guy's ball cap does indeed say "TRIBUTE" right on the front...
...I had no idea that Dale Earnhardt was a firefighter in NYC on that fateful day.
Yes, that's The Intimidator with angel wings...
Every time an MSNBC yapper cries, Dale Earnhart gets his wings. Or something.
ReplyDeleteWe'll call it whatever will get
ReplyDeleteit sold, and if Dale Earnhardt
plays better than firefighters,
so be it.
Anon, Don
This is the greatest and best statue in the world. ... TRIBUTE.
ReplyDeleteWhat?? You didn't buy it?
ReplyDeleteI've noticed over the years as my wife drags me through anty-kew malls that most of the trash for sale in them has been labelled by someone who has not the least clue what the items actually are and has the idea stuck firmly in what passes for his/her brain that being old, broken and filthy conveys great worth. Thus the $6 paint stirring stick, the $50 corncob pipe that one could purchase new in the drug store alongside for %3, and the rest of the useless crap at exorbitant prices.
ReplyDeleteNow, if one is inclined to get one's music from those big, round flat black things that spin, antique and thrift stores do tend to be one of the cheapest and best places to hunt LP records.
ReplyDeleteBe prepared to flip through a whole lot of dreck before finding one album worth purchasing, though. The sixties and seventies had their versions of Justin Bieber too.
Since I couldn't pick that particular - or any - NASCAR driver out of a line-up, the big clue from this view that it was fake was the "NYFD"...a real one would have used "FDNY".
ReplyDeleteJust sayin'
Ancient Woodsman,
ReplyDeleteThe only place it said "NYFD" was on the hand-written tag.
Whoever wrote it apparently thinks that firefighters wear nomex track togs.
"Whoever wrote it apparently thinks that firefighters wear nomex track togs."
ReplyDeleteLike I said, not even the semblance of a clue.
Gerry N.
This is all the more reason for you to come to the Nappanee gunshow, because of the most excellent antique mall close by, where you can browse for an LP of David McCallum singing the classic love songs, or a genuine antique all metal Zebco 33, or books by the pound.
ReplyDeleteOh, and local honey, local cheese, and the platonic ideal of bacon.
I saw that earlier in the week, wondering what the heck it was. I didn't look too closely, though, as my little bro started getting excited about the pointy things in a case.
ReplyDeleteDid you try the BBQ?
That was some really good BBQ. As good as I've had north of the Sweet Tea Line.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what sign that statue will have on it a decade from now in order to get it off the shelf.
ReplyDeletePretty sure that'd make even Larry the Cable Guy facepalm.
ReplyDeleteI own not one, but two, complete She-Ra action figures complete with pega-uni-corn-sus. Hmm. What do you call a horse with wings and a horn? Must ask Erin. Also, I have a second edition Medieval Spawn in first edition packaging.
ReplyDeleteOh crap. I just admitted that on the internet. But if I never take pictures it didn't happen right?
I had a point. Where on earth did I leave that thing?
Don't blink.
