Overheard in front of the computer...

Gunsmith Bob: "I'm going to have to have a talk with Marko..."

Me: "What, the cocktail recipe on his blog?"

Gunsmith Bob: "Yeah, that. That's not very manly."

Me: "He's a writer. Writers drink cocktails. Hemingway drank cocktails."

Gunsmith Bob: "And see how that turned out?"

  1. Not manly? It's 2/3 of a Vesper, cut with a somewhat dry and bitter soda. Sounds mighty satisfying to me.

Unless Gunsmith Bob thinks 007 wasn't manly...

  2. I'm thinking of that old Jimmy Stewart movie Anatomy Of A Murder.

"Gin!... I knew there was something wrong with that guy."

  3. Gunsmith Bob is right, particularly on Hemingway. Reading Hemingway is like trying to swallow a spoonful of corn meal with nothing to wash it down.

  4. I'm a writer, and I drink my whiskey straight.

  5. Ended up? With Hemingway, look how it began! He never had a chance.

  6. Hemingway was fairly damned manly, though--Gunsmith Bob was evading your point-seeking relevance missile. A claimed list of Hemingway's tipples:

    Hemingway and the Cocktail

They don't strike me as being more manly than a Ginny Weasley.

  7. Since I am rarely concerned with my masculinity, I think I shall make some Ginny Weasleys for the wife and me this afternoon. They sound delicious. I love ginger ale and I love gin.

  8. I'll just stick with my 8 year Beam and Coke, after all it's Sunday.

  9. What of the gin & tonic- the official drink of the old British Empire?

  10. You know how some silly liberal reactionaries tried to say that Hemingway was compensating for his concerns about his manhood? I've always thought that was bollocks, until I reflect upon his favorite drink (not "Death In The Afternoon"), the mojito, fer-cryin'out-loud.

  11. Hemingway allegedly recommended champagne and absinthe for seasickness...

Me, the only cocktail I favor is a mai tai, when vacationing in The Islands.

  12. I once had a beer and followed it up with a mai tai...

Woke up the next morning with my ear pierced, and no recollection whatsoever of it having happened.

That was ages ago. Good thing there were no tattoo parlors in My Fair City when I did that.

  13. I'm starting to wonder if Marko either enjoys the stereotype he portrays, or really is looking for a donor liver. Must be in the job description?

  15. But, but, I like mojitos and I'm drinking a gin and tonic right now and I can write (OK, type) Yep, still there. I'm gonna go fall asleep into a drunken stupor now...

  16. Gah! Edit the above to add "looks in pants" with carets around it before "Yep, still there". I keep forgetting the left caret does...something. Plus, I have 2/3 of that gin and tonic in me.

  17. Hemingway liked drinkin' Margaritas and so would probably be a big Jimmy Buffet fan and maybe even have one of those Margaritaville slurpee-machines with his own smilin' mug slapped on it, selling 'em on late-night TeeVee. Damn writers.

  18. But least he wasn't quite as indiscriminate (in booze and women) as Chas Bukowski...
