- So I started the morning bike rides last Wednesday. This makes a week. Go Team Me!
- This time of year, the hostas out front have normally sprouted magnificent waist-high stalks covered in white flowers. So far this year, there are a couple of tiny flower stalks on the hardiest one (coincidentally right under the rain chain on the corner of the house) with a few half-hearted white blossoms barely above the level of the plant's main leaves.
- Sitting in the dentist's chair yesterday, Almost-A-Doctor Sarah (new school year, new almost-a-doctor) noted that I had brought a Kindle so I would have something to do during the waiting periods. Before I realized what I was saying, my mouth blurted "Oh, I love my Kindle
!" I could almost smell the Victory Gin-scented tears trickling down the side of my nose...
Books. Bikes. Boomsticks.

While Team ME still retains the yellow jersey, Tour de Broad Ripple officals are dealing with rumors of the use of wasabi as a performace enhancement by one rider.

Its okay. My Lovely Bride and I "love" our Kindles, too. However, we still love real books and have them all over the house.

I really, really thought I'd only occasionally use my Kindle when I got it. I so love the smell and feel of books. But...but...I read SO much more now than I did before. I just pop the kindle out of my backpack...fire it up...select one of the 100 books I have on there and feel like reading...

I was concerned that I wouldn't like my kindle when I first got it...243 books & a leather cover later...I'm love'n it. The only downside for me is not being able to share books with friends.

WHat LCB said - I read more with the Kindle than before I got it. And I read quite a bit before, unsurprisingly.

The former is a device for reading books.
The latter a very nice toy tablet that you can inefficiently read a book on.)
Best thing about my Kindle is when away from home I can carry a huge library with me. Things like Gibbon and Mommsen and Suetonius and Thucydides and Herodotus. Books I have on the shelves at home but are not about to try shoving into my luggage, but which I usually get wistful about their absence when oversea.
ReplyDeleteMost of the great old stuff - Poe, Conan Doyle, Stevenson - is public domain and either free or available for a nominal price.
Like the others above, I find myself reading a lot more with the Kindle software on my phone AND reading things I wouldn't buy if it were more than the $1-$3 I pick them up for on Amazon (like The Remaining by DJ Molles and its sequel).
ReplyDeleteI need to get a "real" Kindle. It'll be one of the e-ink models though, I don't need another computing device, just something to read with.
Now, I only buy books if they're particularly special (gun books, reference works, etc). Pulp fiction is for the Kindle.

Be aware, then, that I inefficiently read the hell out of some books. ;)
I haven't seen the point of the Kindle yet, as I can read books on the free Kindle software that came with my Samsung Fascinate.

ReplyDeleteI'm another one who is reading more now that I have a Kindle. Before I only used to have 'time to read' on airplanes ... now I carry my kindle in my handbag and find time to read all over the place.
ReplyDeleteIt was also very fortunate that my kindle came pre-loaded (it was a pre-loved kindle) with 86 Heinlein books :)

I bought my first kindle in 2010 (fragile suckers, those e-ink screens do not like to flex) and it's been the best thing I ever spent money on. I've had it on three national tours and don't even want to think about how much weight in books it's saved me.
