The top of my Weather.com landing page shows the current WX at Roseholme Cottage, Nerd Ranch, and Castle Frostbite.
Oddly, Castle Frostbite, in the Kingdom of Upper Cryogenica, is currently five degrees warmer than the ranch in the desert and ten warmer than the cottage in the flatlands. Must be that tropical weather they're about to get. You might have heard about it...
I swear, it can rain ten inches a day on Mobile or Pensacola for a week straight and barely get a mention between AAA baseball scores and the latest goings-on in minor cadet branches of Clan Kardashian, but let a Manhattanite's mousse get mussed and they're issuing directions to the island's denizens on how to safely have your neighbors for dinner should the subway be down for more than an hour, and the rest of the country is compelled to watch.
Snerk... You NAILED that one Tam! :-) I bow to your superior snark!!!
ReplyDelete"...have your neighbors for dinner..."
ReplyDeletemmm, long pig.
Yeah Yeah.
ReplyDeleteIt's what you are used to. NYC by and large gets 2 weather events a year & they get freaked out when they see the third.
Also being an OLD city ( seriously, if you compare modern Urbanization NYC is as old as any city around) old stuff breaks when the weather gets wild. And "the subway broke" sounds innocuous until you realize that more people travel on that line every day than there are people in Pensacola.
Also, the media types in NYC are...weak.
"And "the subway broke" sounds innocuous until you realize that more people travel on that line every day than there are people in Pensacola."
ReplyDeleteAnd yet, oddly, they are no more important to me than the people in Pensacola. Or Bangladesh.
Our local weatherperson was going on about Sandy and I'm thinking "Honey, I only care about two kinds of weather: The kind that is happening to me, and the kind that's about to happen to me. Let the NYC weatherpeople tend to their own knitting."
All subways flood, some more quickly then others. New York has parts that flood when stockbrokers cry after a day of bad trading.
ReplyDeleteMy sis beat feet from NYC to higher ground yesterday. I guess her neighbors were too chewy for he upscale taste.
Gerry
Denizens of NYC believe themselves smart, tough, and independent. Further, they never stop lecturing the rest of us on how smart, tough and independent they are.
ReplyDeleteSo how do they explain Mayor Bloomberg?
Well, there might be a Silver Lining: the UN is located on the water, and if there's a 11 foot Storm Surge.....
ReplyDeleteLet's hope,Les.
ReplyDeleteLes: I think you just might have made my day. :)
ReplyDeletePrediction: When this turns out to just get a little rain to the Noo Yawkers, and the huge storm surge ends up in Virginia and Maryland, the talk will be about how it turned out to be a bunch of nnothing.
ReplyDeleteMind you, now-- the same storm will have hit people. Just not the Important People.
BUBBLEHEAD BE ADVISED THE UN COMPLEX IS LOCATED ON HIGHER GROUND THE STORM SURGE
ReplyDeleteWILL NOT EFFECT IT ONE IOTA
ITS SHEEPSEAD BAY MANHATTAN BEACH CONEY
ISLAND PLUM BEACH REDHOOK THE BATTERY SOUTH STREET WEST STREET WILL GET FLOODING AND WIND DAMAGE OTHER LOW LYING
AREAS WILL GET HIT AS WELL I DOUBT AS IF MANY IN "MUDDLED MERIKA" OR "DEE CEE"
OR THE UN KNOW OR CARE WE EXIST
WE WILL SURVIVE
So, just to be safe, can we drop the bridges and collapse the tunnels off Long Island?
ReplyDelete...It's for the children...?
"Denizens of NYC believe themselves smart, tough, and independent. Further, they never stop lecturing the rest of us on how smart, tough and independent they are."
ReplyDelete...and yet the very same smart, tough, independent types scurry around like rodents, cleaning out supermarket shelves any time the weather starts getting rough and ole Bloomie screams, "You're all going to die!!!" and buggers off to his {undisclosed location}.
Of course, being trapped in close proximity to large masses of panicked New Yorkers is a test of anyone's toughness.
Money, and money alone, talks: when Mobile has the biggest US GDP and close to double its nearest competitor, I am sure it will be just as important to the newsmen as the greater NYC area. (for that matter 4 out of the top ten GDP districts are the Washington-Boston corridor)
ReplyDeleteBut presumably you don't care about Mobile either? You don't live there do you?
"But presumably you don't care about Mobile either?"
ReplyDeleteNot more than academically, no.
Anon 4:08: the MSM won't give a rat's ass about Mobile even in your described scenario, unless - and this is the key point - they are based there. Until then you're flyover country, fodder for periodic pieces in The Atlantic or Newsweek (oops, scratch them) about Why are people who don't agree with us so stupid?
ReplyDeleteAnd good luck getting the "intelligentsia" to relocate to Mobile, whatever economic and demographic conditions obtain.
And, not to put words in our hostesses mouth (or on her keyboard) but I believe that was her point. Bad events happen elsewhere routinely, but risk inconveniencing the Coastal Elites and suddenly it's Armageddon.
You know, as a former Pensacola boy I had to move to Orlando an hour from the nearest beach to actually have 3 hurricanes in one year. Unfortunately it just meant long shifts instead of three hurricane parties.
ReplyDeleteAs far as frankenstorm, I am still waiting to see the vids of the snow being driven by hurricane winds...
Instead I see hosers in water puddles to their ankles dramatically leaning in to the wind like they can barely stand up. But I haven't seen the obligatory Harley roll by in the background like it was nothing though.
Tam, I concur with your thoughts on this subject. The obvious silliness of the New Yorkers has nothing to do with whether or not you and I dislike each other.
ReplyDeleteP.s. I do not dislike you. That does not mean that I positively like you, 'specially after what you wrote at me. Say, after your recent good training, just how far is pistol shot, anyway?
