Above is a "Taos Burger": crispy green chiles, BBQ sauce, and cheddar. Also, deep fried jalapeno slices and pickle spears with green chile mayo in which to dip them. Absolutely divine.
In New Mexico I had to tuck my gun burkha back behind the butt of my pistol since, while they do not honor my Hoosier toter's permit, they have no problem with unlicensed open carry. Jay G was in similar straits in Colorado.
A minor annoyance, since most people just plain don't notice, but there's the occasional lingering stare at your hip from a cashier or uninvited conversation from some goof who wants to know if you're a cop or not. Thankfully things were idjit-free on this vacation.

Driving around NM years ago, I tried chicken fried steak at some local eateries. Instead of gravy, they topped it with chile con queso, which is actually darn good.
Per the other thread, you drove right by the Whittington Center and didn't go shootin? For shame!

Not being able to get green chile on a burger out here is the rare thing. (Though popular choices for hairy wild ass guess for which chain you meant would include Lottaburger and Bob's Burger Bowl in Santa Fe). The Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail is fun, too.
PS I stopped for lunch one day at the Questa Cafe, north of Taos. I had a chicharrones (mexican pork rinds) burrito with green chile. OMG. I finished driving the Enchanted Circle afterwards, and I thought I was hallucinating from whatever they put in that burrito. It was damn good.

ReplyDeleteAbe's Cantina in Arroyo Seco, north of Taos. It's a local store / bar / beanery, and the food is served plainly, but we used to drive there all the way from Angel Fire just to eat tamales for lunch. Yes, they're that good. Get there early, as when they run out, that's it.
Guadalajara Grill in Taos. There's one on the north side and one on the south side. They are owned and run by a family that migrated up from Guadalajara, hence the name. If I were to pass through Taos and stop for only one meal, this is where it would be. The locals eat there, too; 'nuff said.
Word to the wise - they're staring at your hip because it's your hip...

The only time I've been questioned about open carrying was at the NRA convention in Pittsburgh in 2011.

I have to tell you, you know, it's part of reading this post, this blog, the feeling most people get when they realize Tam passed within spitting distance of where they live. My, I felt this thrill going up my shooting hand. I mean, I don't have that too often.
