Northbound and down...
Rolling north from K-Town to Naptown shortly.
I miss cruise control. Then again, the top on the Z3 is getting pretty noisy at freeway speeds; agricultural as it is, the cabin of the Subie is tranquil by comparison.
No cruise in the Subie? I can't remember the last car I had without that option (not counting part time toys like my beater '85 CJ-7).
The '95 Cavalier my wife and I bought together a couple months before we married left the factory without it. We had it added as a dealer installed option. It did stay broken for a year once though.
Summit Racing has a cheap universal cruise control just for you. Fitted on my '97 Subie OBS wagon - same hippieflage green as yours - it works extremely well. No fiddly tools needed. About an hour install time if you're being careful. 4 years since the installation and still working well.
First thought would be the engine management computer. At least it was for Fords. Best bet would be to search for web forum types for the Subies, and see what sort of scuttlebutt there is on that subject.
@Will: Actually, 25.5 is really, REALLY wringing every mile per gallon out of ever drop. The Interwebs agree with me.
The Outback is just a sporty, high-sitting AWD station wagon.
Oh, and I had to replace a rear wheel bearing on mine when I bought it, too, Tam. Probably one reason that I got it so cheap. It made an odd sound that the seller tried to blame on a bad tire. No biggie; $200 fixed it in an hour flat.

Largely irrelevant, but I'm curious as to highway mileage the Subie delivers between K-town and Indy. And, average speed, obviously.

ReplyDeleteInteresting. My '07 Outback is only giving me about 25.5 @ 70 mph. I kinda woulda thought that the Forester would not have been as good.

Heh. I remember passing those buses, noticing they were full of Marines, and wondering "Did that bus just honk, or was I imagining that?"

The mileage Matt is reporting isn't out of line; Subies aren't known for fuel-sipping.
ReplyDeleteI was a little surprised at how much fixing the wheel bearing impacted the mileage on mine. >25mpg with over 200k on the motor is spectacular.

...but built on the longer, heavier Legacy sedan platform, vis a vis the Impreza subcompact-based Forester.
A '99 Forester is 13 inches shorter and almost 250 pounds lighter than an '07 Outback.
Yeah, but the sectional density of the Outback is impressive.
