[Y]ou have to understand that there are millions or even billions of guns in the world. They come in many forms, but all share in common that simple, basic, safe handling rules would prevent their accidental discharge. Are you for guns going off accidentally?Opposing kids learning basic firearms safety because you think guns are icky is like not teaching them to look both ways when crossing the street because you think cars are icky.
Your phobias are going to get kids killed, hippie. Eddie Eagle should be in schools now.
Eddie Eagle should never have been kicked out of schools. I've seen photos of children learning basic safety on a bolt action rifle as late as the 60's. But a returning veteran with a mental disorder climbs a bell tower at a UNIVERSITY and they make guns a taboo item to even mention in public schools.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great point. We teach kids knife safety even though the only knife most people interact with these days is a butter knife at the kitchen table.
ReplyDelete"But... guns ARE icky! They're the MOST icky. There are NO good guns, but there are some good cars, like Volt and Prius n' stuff..."
ReplyDeleteHere's one of the great ironies of life today. The same people who promote Sex Education, flat oppose Firearms Safety eductation and the same people who promote Firearms Safety Education usually (usually I say) oppose Sex Education in the schools.

Can we call it abstinence-only gun education?
Delete"If it saves only one life......" Most of the pleas that begin this way are crap. If they realy cared about "one life" they would be all about getting firearms training into every elementary school. I have doubts on their ideas saving any life ever; I have no doubts that Eddie Eagle saves lives, regularly. Ok, hippies, start saving those precious lives, teach firearm safety.
ReplyDeleteHere in MN we're slowly pushing back the darkness. The hot new club sport for High Schools is Trap Shooting, there are 50 or so teams with 30 schools waiting to start. I ran into a middle-schooler last night out at the trap field, she was excited for next year when she'd be able to go to a school that has a team.
ReplyDeleteWhat the anti's are afraid of is people encountering guns out in the real world and realizing that all the PSH is just that.
I thought that I read somewhere that Eddie Eagle was taught in every public grade school in Ohio. Or am I mis-remembering?
ReplyDeleteKaeghl
However the same schools that would perma-ban Eddie Eagle would likely have n problem with Barry the condom wearing Banana teaching them safe recreational sex
ReplyDeleteProblem is, some of these clowns would rather see a kid dead than taught gun safety. They're actually that freakin' nuts.
ReplyDeleteSame people who think using lethal force to save yourself or someone else from an attacker is 'never justified'. Because better you be dead than morally stained by saving your ass from the rapist/murderer/torturer.
Firehand,

You know, people say that, but I bet if you grabbed 'em by the throat and started squeezing when they did, we'd find out that they didn't really mean it. ;)
No one's last words were ever "I'm glad I was unarmed..."

ReplyDeleteSgtsound- I learned basic safety on a bolt action in my public elementary school in the early eighties!
ReplyDeleteWhile we're at it, let's not teach kids about water, fire, or electrical safety...
ReplyDeleteIf they don't know, it can't hurt them.
IIRC, that tower shooter was found to have a brain tumor.
ReplyDeleteI'd say "let's ban brain tumors", but they cover it better saying lets find the cure for cancer.
