Random Musing...

Selecting a concealed carry gun based on its looks is like buying a stylish chrome rim for the space saver spare in your trunk that you've never used.

  1. Unless you rotate in that carry gun every other oil change....wait, what?

  2. Don't you have a spinner on your doughnut?

    Wait....that sounds weird.

  3. Too right.

Save the gun-bling for your BBQ gun.

  4. But when you shoot somebody and have to hand over your weapon to the cops, you want them to know you cared enough to only use the very best...

  5. I think form follow function so I would prefer a little more ergonomic pistol over say, a Glock.

But that is my thinking. If I can get a stainless steel slide on an alloy frame for the same money, I know what I will be carrying.

  6. 1. Go "bang!" every time you pull the trigger, especially with protection projectiles that usually don't chamber as easily as FMJ.

    3. Comfortable to carry and concealable.

  7. By the way, you'd be disappointed to know how much some people fuss over what stuff in the spare well looks like.

  8. Would love to have the backstory that prompted this musing.

  9. I dunno. You could make a Jennings so reliable Gaston Glock would hop in a casket just so he could spin in his grave and I'm not sure I could feel comfortable carrying such an ugly gun.

But, yes. I'm 95% on the side of function rather than form.

Minus the KRISS. Because we all have weaknesses.

  10. I can think of one purchase where looks was a prime factor. And it wasn't even THE primary (pre-number S&W was) but I did have a bad case of "oh look it's shiny" when I decided to make the trade.

Traded a Taurus 24/7 9mm and $50 (I bet that makes Tam smile).

This isn't a carry gun either. It's a range toy.

  11. I saw one of those space saver tires fly right off the rim on a car on 285 around Atlanta the other day. The driver obviously thought he/she could proceed to drive at normal highway speed using it. Wrong.

The space saver tire has its place. I carry a regular tire as a spare in my pickup, and I tend to carry full size guns. I've decided they are the right choice for me -- but of course that doesn't mean they are the right choice for other people.

  12. I'd say there's no reason to get one you didn't like looking at... assuming there's no function or price differential. But yeah, picking primarily on looks for something that shouldn't ever be seen is a little silly.

  13. Oh, come on. A cute concealed-carry weapon is like having nice lingerie. Just 'cause hardly anyone sees it doesn't mean that one doesn't feel prettier for wearing it. Um, I mean ... that's to say ... uh ... maybe I should stop now.

  14. There are ugly guns? Never met one personally, some are prettier than others, but all look good to me.

  15. Please tell me you didn't get a Hi Point...

  16. Drang,

While I have actually owned them in the past, I do not currently own one, nor do I have any intention of changing that status. ;)

  17. Came to use the analogy Mike C did.

Looks as primary, no. But all things are generally equal in the nitty gritty of defensive handguns, they all "lift and separate" about the same, so why not choose the one that you like to look at in private?

If you like the tool, practice becomes that much more enjoyable, that much less merely duty.

  18. I waffle back and forth on buying my brother's Hi Point .45.

He bought it when he was learning to reload figuring it was no great loss if he messed it up.

We've kicked around the price of $75 but I always find better things to spend that sum on.

  19. I whole heartedly agree, although the "exception that proves the rule" is the HiPoint.

    And the FN 1900 ...

  20. If you have to whip it out, it should impress people. I'm just saying.

  21. I had a rental car once on a family vacation that got a flat. After getting five people's luggage out of the trunk, I learned the spare was flat, too.

Check those spares. I know I do, now.

If you have a spinner rim on your spare, give it a spin every now and then, just for fun.

  22. I don't know, my wife keeps threatening to cerakote her next pistol bright purple with hot pink controls "Because I Can".

  23. If I pull a pistol on someone I want all the action to stop while they bug their eyes out and say: "Holy SHIT is that a REAL Savage 1903 32 acp? Does it have the original mag??? OMG!!!"

  24. Oh yeah?! Then why do womenfolk wear pretty underwear?
