This dead-serious Volvo V70R is my kinda sleeper. Only the stance, bright red Brembo calipers, and aero tea tray over the rear window offer hints that this ain't your mom's family bus...

Wagons were made to haul things: This one hauls ass. |
Any car geeks can identify the race tracks represented by the decals in the bottom right hand corner of the rear window?
.
Isn't the far right one the famous German track, ... err, I can't spell it.
ReplyDeleteTrue giddyup in a sedate package. I'm still eyeballing the Magnum R/T AWD that's for sale at my local dealership...
ReplyDeleteDon't think any are the Nurburgring.
ReplyDeleteThe one on the right is Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
I *think* the one on the right is Sonoma Raceway in The Chute configuration (formerly Sears Point).
No clue about the center.
Robin,
ReplyDeleteNo, it isn't the Nurbuergring. (ue = umlauted u)
The one on the left is Road Atlanta. The one on the right is Mid-Ohio. I don't know what the center one is. Sorry.
Don't know about the other two, but the first one on the left is Road Atlanta....Georgia transplant here, btw.
ReplyDeleteTom
Middle one is Mazda Raceway, aka. Laguna Seca... I think.
ReplyDeleteNope, I'm wrong. Missing the left then the 90 degree right after the corkscrew. I'm a fail.
ReplyDeleteThis gives me many layers of want
ReplyDeleteYeah, the one on the left is Road Atlanta after it was changed to add the chicane at the end of the back straight. I been lucky enough to do laps around both the before version and the after.
ReplyDeleteHmm, dunno why I was referred to the right one twice. The second one should have referred to the one on the left, but that was wrong anyway, so never mind.
ReplyDeleteThat should be Sebring on the right.
ReplyDeleteWait, check that- the one on the right is not Sebring.
ReplyDeleteThe center is Nelson Ledges in Ohio.
ReplyDeleteBeing more of a quarter-mile type, I couldn't tell you a thing about those tracks. Being partial to sleepers myself, though, I can appreciate the Volvo. Bet you'd have liked the Dodge D/Dart, back when.
ReplyDeleteNelson Ledges road course
ReplyDeleteAw, you're killin' me. I finally got rid of the Aluminum Falcon this weekend. Always thought I'd make a project out of it someday . . . but it's somebody else's project now.
ReplyDeleteOught to be an ipd decal somewhere. Not a true Volvo hotrod w/o one.
ReplyDeleteLOL, love the plate too! And sleeper is right! I'm betting the suspension has been modifed with a 1-2 inch drop, probably upgraded Bilstein shocks and bigger sway bars! :-)
ReplyDeleteMy first car was a Volvo 240DL four door. It would do every bit of 85 MPH! (They're boxy, but they're good!)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I remember seeing this ad for the Volvo wagon and it stuck with me.

Cheers,

Did you see the episode of "chasing classic cars" where the guy bought Paul Newman's Volvo station wagon? It had a hopped up Ford V8 and "upgraded" suspension. Is this that car?
ReplyDeleteThe fastest I have ever driven was in a station wagon- An Opel Omega .... 5 speed manual transmission ..... I was cruising right along on the A3 and closing rapidly on Nuremburg and asked how fast 220 Km/h was in MPH ..... when I got the answer I decided we did NOT need to get to Garmisch that quickly .....
ReplyDeleteThe Autobahn of the early 1990's was an amazing thing.....
I've been in one of those.
ReplyDeleteIt was pretty zippy, and held on to the ground real good.
(What? I wasn't driving it...)
pretty sure those are the tracks from the classic Atari game "pole position"
ReplyDeleteLeft: Road Atlanta (long course)
ReplyDeleteCenter: Nelson Ledges
Right: Mid-Ohio
The best sleeper vehicle is a 1984 Vanagon. The day I passed the cop doing 90 in a 70 zone and watched him do a WTF doubletake at the radar gun was the day I learned that. And no, I didn't get pulled over. Last I saw of him was a befuddled look as he was examining the radar gun. One of my lottery dreams was always to drop a Porche engine in the back of that van for the ultimate sleeper.
Brick, my 4th car, in '83, was a '73 144. It'd run over 100 (mph, not kph) & just sing along. Allowed me to survive a no-sides-touching wheel-to-roof flip, as well. Tough car, if not really stylish for a then-18-year-old.
ReplyDeleteAlways wanted to get my hands on a 164 & find out what that I-6 would do.
