Automotif XLVII...

Seen in the Fresh Market parking lot yesterday:

Super-tight Benz 450SL

Yellow calipers, cross-drilled rotors, and AMG wheels

Canary yellow

Immaculate interior

  1. Tasty. They look so much better with the euro-spec bumpers and lights and without the clunky steering wheel that looks like it belongs in a truck.

  2. That was my dream car when I was in my 20s. I had a preppy streak in me back then, but it's a sweet set of wheels.

  3. Drove one of those once a few miles. Nice ride.

  4. Pretty AND well maintained! And a nice car to top it off!

  5. I am reminded of a joke:

"For centuries, women have made use of certain mechanical devices to enhance their sexual pleasure. In recent decades, the Mercedes Benz SL has ranked highly among them."

I think this was from a fake ad in National Lampoon from the early '70's, but I could be wrong.

  6. Wildly and completely off-topic for this post, but this is the most convenient place to drop this. Relating back to that post ages ago about folks getting up in arms about lion hunts, here's a new example of hand-waving, cute-driven hysteria.

  7. Cross-drilled rotors... in a 450SL?

Why, for the love of god?

  8. "More immoral acts have been performed for that car than any other." - Can't remember who said it.

  9. Kevin:

That sounds very much like a P.J. O'Rourke quote.

Which doesn't rule out it being from the National Lampoon, of course. I wish BrainyQuote had a more complete citation.

  10. The later ones were so heavy I believe they were called "Panzerwagen" in Germany.

My friend said he thought they were the German T-Bird. Just to ruin it for everyone.

That's okay, because another friend once thought the 914 Porsche looked "like a tunafish sandwich" and I always think of that when I see one.

"Chacun a son gout" as the French say.

  11. There's one rotting on the street a couple of blocks from my house.
