My grandad spent some time south of the border during the Catholic uprising. He said the locals called a machete "the rifle that never runs out of bullets."
re IDPA Targets. After talking things over with some Medical types a few years ago, I recommend the Poor Man's Anatomical Target System. Unfortunately, it needs to be used on Private Property, because of so many Range Rules out there.
First, dig a series of holes 2 feet deep and about 6 inches wide, as far as you want to shoot. Line them with some PVC Drain pipe until it's flush with the ground. Think of a Golf Course. Then grab some 8 foot long 2x4s, and drop one into each hole. They DO NOT have to be Perfectly Vertical. If they Tilt some, even better, because Goblins seldom stand up Square to your Firearm. That should give you a Vertical Pole about 6 feet high sticking out of the ground. Take some 2 inch Duct Tape, and run a Band around the Top Edge, and another about 4 feet above the ground.
What you end up having roughly corresponds to the Spinal Column and Vital Organ placement of Humans, i.e., Brain, Throat (Jugular Veins), Spine, Heart, Aorta, etc. ROUGHLY.
And Scoring is simple. If you hit the 2x4 between the Tape Lines, with a Bullet, Slug, Shot or Arrow, you Win. If you don't, you Lose. Only Hits count. You want to take one shot with a 12 Gauge Slug at 20 feet, fine. If you want to empty a 1911 Mag at 20 feet, and 5 out of 7 Hit, fine. If you want to empty a Mauser 98 at 400 yards, and can get 3 Hits, fine. What ever you want to set up for Points is up to you. Just remember, the Principal is that ONLY HITS COUNT.
Now, I'm not going to say that if you Hit the Target with One Shot, that it's an Instant Stop or Kill. After all, the Bullet that's hitting the 2x4 does need some "Ooomph" when it strikes. And the Human Body can do some strange Things when it is shot. But if one can hit that kind of Target consistently from Point Blank to as far as you can shoot, chances are you might stand a better chance if you have to (God Forbid!) shoot someone for real.
And if you shoot enough and break the 2x4, no biggie, just go to Home Depot and get some more. They keep them next to the Sten Gun Parts.
Now, if I only had a few hundred acres of my own land to run a Demo Video....
Yeah, when I saws "infinite repeater" I was hoping for a Laumer link. Either Bolos or Retief.
Problem with the Hitchhiker's Guide reference is that I can't picture Tam in the role of Arthur Dent. She'd be more of a Silastic Armorfiend of Striterax. With Zaphod's insouciance. And Slartibartfast's disapproval of carelessness.
Re: the targets. It s much simpler than that. Anyone who's dealt with MOA with any regularity would see that seven yards is between a quarter and a third of 25 yards, so make the target between a quarter and a third the size. Close enough.
Still, there's no substitute for shooting at the actual distances, so the better answer is; go somewhere else to shoot and quit screwin' around.
Better still, understand that real life shooting is never on standard, stationary targets at standard distances, and get over the gamer mentality. - Lyle

Geek with a .45 once had a marvelous post, illustrations and all, on holding for high COM. It's gone now, and I, of course, did not think to save it.
ReplyDeleteIDPA is a game, for chrissakes. There's a reason those targets are not anatomically correct.
ReplyDelete"IDPA is a game, for chrissakes."
ReplyDeleteI know that, and you know that, but maybe you should explain that to... oh... 3/4s of the participants. And the founders. ;)
Heh, nice Bolo reference there.

Bolo ref AND Hitchhiker's Guide ref!

I think I've encountered the infinite repeater previously -- either in a John C. Wright novel or Punisher 2099.
