Color me a very deep green.
Speaking of fortuitous encounters at dumpsters, if you look up the definition of "Lucky, lucky bastard" in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of ColtCCO.
Speaking of dumpsters, I have a Savage 99F that I'm told my grandfather found in a dumpster in Chicago.
I'm also assured he turned it in to the police and got to keep it after it was declared not reported stolen or involved in a crime.
I have no first-hand way of knowing if that's true, since that grandfather's been dead for a while, but it's a great story, so I'll maintain that it's true in any case.
Portland State University did something similar in the early 1980's ... throwing away periodicals.
Porsfis scored their entire SF magazine section ... I helped them cart it out before the paper scrap folks got at it ... including a nearly complete set of Astounding, and the successor, Analog ....

Heh.
A coworker of mine found a gold bar in a dumpster. It was small, smaller than a pack of cigarettes, but it was gold.
Yes, I was working in Washington, DC at the time.
Holy. Crap.
Damn! I thought I did well last week when I got 2000 .224 55 grain FMJ for $28. I have been eclipsed, big time.
Tracy
I guess the lobbyist who threw out the gold bar didn't want to be bothered with having a load of small change in his pocket ....
