We're the only ones qualified to...

...commit egregious violations of Rules Two and Three.

If he hadn't had his booger hook on the bang switch, and hadn't compounded the error by pointing the gun at his buddy while doing so, nobody would be limping right now.

Remember, kids: The Four Rules are life. You have to violate two of the four to pull off a stunt like that copper.

1. All firearms are always loaded
2. Never let the muzzle of a firearm point at anything you are not willing to destroy
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot
4. Be sure of your target and what is behind it

One cop shot another while they were searching for "illegal weapons".

Can you say "Instant Karma"?

I think it was back in 1999 that I asked Rich Lucibella to post the Four Rules on The Firing Line.

I'm a safety guy.

When I was a school bus driver for college money a decade and some ago, all my kids on my routes could recite The Four Rules plus the kiddo correlaries by the end of the first semester they rode with me.

And when I go up stairs as point with a backup these days in a hairy situation, I'm always conscious that the biggest threat may not be in front of me, but behind me...

And people wonder why cops make me nervous.

To be fair here, I know a police sniper who was covering an entry team. When the entry team called that they were approaching the house, the sniper flipped off the safety, with finger off the trigger. As soon as the safety released, the weapon discharged. The round went through the front door of the house, struck a refrigerator in the kitchen, and buried itself in the wall behind. No one was injured.

The other officers, along with the rifle club we are members of, chided him without mercy about killing major appliances.

It turns out that the rifle, a Remington 700, has a history of these sort of discharges. Just google remington 700 discharge safety malfunction, and you will see.

The police got rid of the rifles and replaced them shortly thereafter.

Of course, to be honest, that's something that should have been caught by an armorer beforehand.
