Dear Diary: I'm tired of washing the Commander's Che t-shirt...

This is rich. This is absolutely beautiful. This is the funniest thing I have ever read.

It seems that the poor little Dutch middle class girl went to college and got her head packed with leftist twaddle and her wardrobe packed with Che shirts. Showing that she had more chutzpah than your average whiny Rage Against The Machine fan, she actually decided to run off to the jungles of Columbia to live communally with the guerrillas and be a terrorist against oppressive capitalism. Unfortunately, once she got there she found out that it actually involved living communally in the jungle and being a terrorist. And their vacation plan sucked. Plus they made her cook. It wasn't romantic, and it sure wasn't like a RATM song.

Or maybe it was, if she'd actually listened.

  1. I want to feel sorry for her, but I really can't seem to do it. I guess I really am heartless.

  2. Just another example after decades of thousands of such examples where a beautiful leftist, liberal theory gets brutally and maliciously raped by the facts of reality.

  3. Yup... schadenfreude pretty much sums that up. Some folks have to learn about communism the hard way, I suppose.

  4. "Nijmeijer's parents, in a brief statement to Dutch media, said a faxed letter arrived in 2003 that "made it clear" their daughter had joined the FARC. They said the mother visited her daughter in a jungle camp but couldn't woo her back home: 'Tanja's mind was not to be changed.'"

Didn't her name used to be Patty??

    ;)

  5. She's Dutch so besides pot-smokin' I'm pretty sure there was more than just cookin' going on, with "no romantic relationships without their consent." Well Communists have always been advocates of "free" love, and against exclusive relationships, so you can figure that she had to share "from her ability to each according to their needs..." Nasty bit of philosophy is Communism.

  6. Yes dirt, "community of women" is one of the points in the Manifesto, and they weren't talking about the Wymyn's Studies Dept.

It was also covered rather well in Brave New World, in almost the exact same manner that DirtCrashr describes. Don't those dolts know how to read? Did they think Huxley was joking?

I guess the philosophical points seem to paint the rosey picture with the fluffy bunnies that all the Marxists want. Feh. Let them all bath in their own filth.

  9. You have to have a heart of stone not laugh at her crying -Oscar Wilde (kinda)

    That applies perfectly..

  10. What we need to do is encourage the leftist rebellious radical minds to take part in the class struggle. Meaning, send'em all there. Seems like it'll do the trick.

  11. I suspect she would have made a more pleasant end of it if she'd faced off with a tank in Palestine.

  12. But FARC spokesman Raul Reyes disputed that view during a recent interview with the Dutch network TV Nova, although he gave no details about Nijmeijer's location or health.

He said Nijmeijer was more than welcome to go on holiday with her family. "If she needs a month, then fine."

Translation: Please get this psycho-***** off our hands.

  13. Matt- Patty Hearst, oddly, went on to have a successful acting career, if an unconventional one.

It freaked me right the hell out to see her name in credits the first time, too.

  14. For understatement on Patty see

    Trivia:
On February 4, 1974 she was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army.

  15. I've been in a jungle. I would expect that would cure anybody of any unrealistic expectations on any subject. There may be worse places, but I can't think of any off hand.

  16. booknote: This reminds me of "Don Quixote USA" by Richard Powell (who also wrote "A Shot in The Dark"). Yes, I read it in Readers Digest.

An Eagle Scout Peace Corps babe-in-the-woods gets kidnapped into a jungle revolution, and bumbles his way into leading it, with nothing more than a Sears charge and the Scout Field Book. Way better than Woody Allen's movie. The 'girlfriend sidekick' role was just written for this bint.

  18. And the funny part? She did a thesis on FARC. Guess she got an F.

  19. In the diary, Nijmeijer abhors the strict discipline imposed by FARC's male commanders — no smoking, no phone calls, no romantic relationships without their consent. She says the rank and file are hungry and bored, and describes FARC leaders as both materialistic and corrupt.

Hell, I'd say she's lucky she didn't get used as a camp whore, as opposed to just a cook. These aren't exactly the enlightened we're talking about, here.

"Colombia was the turning point," said a college friend from Holland who worked with Nijmeijer in Colombia. "She was so shocked by the gap between the rich and poor and was determined to do something about it."

Here's a hint, darling, Communism ain't it. (Of course, the 'legitimate' government of Colombia probably ain't it, either.)

  20. she was "tired of not having anything for herself"

Well, little girl, that IS the Communist Ideal, in theory, isn't it?

  21. draven has fingered what our old New Left was all about: let's all join the world movement now, and when we get bored and need a hug, we can get 30 days off and have things of our own again.

Like Steffens on a bad day, "I have been over into the future, and it sucks."

  22. "The believing mind reaches its perihelion in the so-called Liberals. They believe in each and every quack who sets up his booth on the fairgrounds, including the Communists. The Communists have some talents too, but they always fall short of believing in the Liberals."
