On this date in 1969, Ted Kennedy launched his car into the waters of Poucha Pond and walked off leaving Mary Jo Kopechne to drown alone. The night's activities simultaneously launched a new subgenre of political humor.
Apparently if you live in Massachusetts and your last name is "Kennedy", you really can get away with manslaughter and not even have it mess up your senatorial career.

True enough, but I still believe that Ted Kennedy can crap out a better Senator than that "Utter and Dismal Failure" Harry Reid, who shares the blame with the Wicked Witch of the West, Nancy Pelosi, for driving congressional approval ratings down to nearly 10 points lower than Nixon's worst poll numbers.
Maybe Senator Kennedy could put the commonwealth in his will for a couple of hundred million. Seeing how the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is now stuck with a $22 Billion dollar bill for the Big Dig he supported.
It looks like it won't be long before Ted and MJ have a shot at a reunion of sorts. If Ted never had to answer for his crime then, perhaps he will sooner rather than later when he finally meets his maker. I hope he winds up in the appropriate place.
Ironically - “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel won the Grammy for song of the year.
Happy Birthday to Me! :)
Bwahaha! That's a great VW ad, even if it did come from National Lampoon. You want to bet there'll be a bunch of folks blogging today that "Tipsy Ted's car has killed more people than my guns"?
In the great game of "What If," I wonder what would have happened if Deputy Sheriff Christopher Look had decided that Kennedy's Lincoln, which he saw make a wrong turn and speed away before he could speak to the driver, was driving suspiciously or erratically enough to initiate a traffic stop. Might Mary Jo Kopechne still be alive today, playing with her grandchildren? She would have turned 68 this month.
