Word.

Put not your faith in magic swords.

The most important word in "gunfight" is not "gun", it's "fight".

  1. Weapons are but tools, used by Homo self-styled Sapiens. It is the intent of the person that really matters. Training comes second, but first is intent.

The more tools you have that you know how to use, the greater your options. Sometimes, just your trained observation and senses are enough to dissuade a predator. If you hate to fill out paperwork the way I do, it's always better not to be in the situation in the first place.

But there are the rare occasions where all you can do is fight. As a blogger puts it, "Like a cornered cat." Intent.

Then again, I'm reminded that, occasionally, God favors the side with the most ammunition. :)

  2. Excellent and concise choice of words. I am a Subject Control and Firearms instructor for my PD. My fellow officers and new trainees will hear that quote often.

Don't worry though, they know I am not nearly clever enough to come up with it on my own. You will get all the proper kudos. They should all be reading your blog as well too anyways...

  3. A .22 to the eye stops quicker than a .44 to the thigh. Practice practice practice. Size matters but shot placement is what really counts. And having the thing at hand.

  4. Naw, Tam, I've got a couple of those .38s. (Well, more than a couple, and only one 3". And, well, mine are Colt's.) I've had people surprised they would even go off at the range. They were even more surprised that I could hit what I shot at.

(Please to note: I am not a good shot. My standard is 1 shot per second, double action, pie plate groups out to 25 yards. But based on some of the people---generally armed with SuperMeDooper UltraKillemAthons, you'd think I was Rob Frickin' Leatham his own self.)

I've shot lighter guns, and I've shot flatter guns, and (as you say) Vishnu knows I've shot more powerful guns.

But right or wrong, good or bad or indifferent, the 2" and 3" Colt Cobras work for me.

    But you know what?

Dang if I wouldn't like to have a .41 Avenger. As Chief Dan George could have said about his piece of hard rock candy in The Outlaw Josey Wales, "It ain't for shootin', it's just for lookin' at."

This is not to praise, excessively, the Colt Cobra.

IF I WAS A SERIOUS SHOOTER (instead of a gun nut), I would have kept the very first centerfire pistol I ever bought, a Colt e-nickle Series 70, and never bought another handgun. (Come to think of it . . . dang, I could have done a LOT worse for a first handgun!)

IF I WAS A SERIOUS SHOOTER, all the money I have put towards: other Colts, S&Ws, Glocks, Berettas, Taurii, and so forth, would have gone towards purchasing bulk bulk bulk quantities of 230 grain ball and whichever hollowpoint I could get my hands on at the moment.

Twentyfive years later, I'd be hell on wheels with that Colt.

  5. Cossack -- I'm no better a shot than you but at 25 yds you & I know that pie plate group will still go a very long way to stopping a confrontation.

And I just keep practicing. And I have found that, at the same level of practice, I'm better with a 3 or 4 inch wheelgun (almost as good with my snubs) than my 1911. Still ain't giving it up, though.

I'm not shooting for competition, I'm shooting to keep myself and those around me out of trouble. If I shoot one of our steel matches it's to see how I do under pressure, not how I do against the others.

Excellent point. I sometimes remind myself, when I'm drooling over yet another firearm I'd buy if I had the money, what I SHOULD be drooling over is the cases of ammo I could get for the guns I already HAVE.
