When the Second Amendment was created, we were a nation of far-flung farmers. There weren’t any police departments, sheriffs or National Guard. The head of the family was all of those. He had to have a gun.I... really, I just don't know where to start with that. That is willful ignorance of long practice manning the walls of an iron fortress of native stupidity. You could bounce cannonballs of logic off that all day and not chip the paint. That is a sea of ignorance so dense it could float a black hole.
But today, we have law enforcement. Hunters use rifles, not guns. Now, no one is safe.

Sigh, why do such things ALWAYS come out of the state I live in.
That is weapons grade ignorance right there. Someone'd better call the UN ignorance inspection team!

Tam, I'm going with "malice". Nobody is that stupid by accident.
"The head of the family was all of those. He had to have a gun."
Isn't what he's indirectly saying here is that law enforcement is now head of the family? Cool with me; I'll just send my electric and gas bill to the Sheriff!!!
Ok, a little dishonest political spin... just because I find it funny.
"But today, we have law enforcement. Now, no one is safe."
See what I did there? I took the lie out, and made a true.

rickn8or -
I am; was dropped on my head as a baby.
At lest I thank thats what my dad meant, when he would sigh, shake his head, and say, "Man I wish I hadn't dropped you on your head."
Maybe she was dropped on her head as a baby.
Hmm, did you think about that? Hmm did you?
;-(
Mark becareful stupid people kill more people every year than guns.
"He was kicked in the head by a horse."
"Oh, well. What a pity. When was that?"
"Tuesday, Wednesday, twice on Friday, and all day Saturday."

Susan M. Kloepfer, I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul.

Google loves her.
Strikes me as someone who's led a very sheltered life and been fortunate enough never to need to fend for herself.

"so dense it could float a black hole."
FTW
Uh. did you see the way they have the Opinion Poll Rigged? At this time, over 4,600 "Like," but not even a "Dislike" Button.
And in case of Trouble, the Patriots Militia wants us to hand out Guns to people like these?
And they Vote.
Bubblehead I think you are refering to the Facebook plugin. The way that thing works across all sites that use it is that one can only "like" an article. Sadly Facebook does not have a "WTF is this crap" button.
Keith,
I would have to hit that button for the whole of Facebook. I still have no idea why anyone would want to use that idiotic crap.

Note to self:
When in New Jersey do not drink the water. There is something in it that destroys the brain.

jtfxr69, nice bit of research. Not exactly dispositive but certainly illustrative.
She was 60 when your story was written. That puts her about a year or two older now.
Those of us who decry the state of education nowadays have only to look at this lady nearing pensioner age and see that the old curmudgeon who wrote Ecclesiastes was right - there really IS nothing new under the sun.
I started rebutting her bizarre letter but really, Tam's right. Not a thing you could say or do would change this lady's mind or her outlook.
I knew a lady like this once. She worked for the County Assessor. Had a picture of John Kennedy on her desk. Her answer to all of life's evils was "Well then they should ban it!"
How do you speak to a mind that small and unimaginative?

Nigerian robospam makes more sense.
Gerry - That opinion is far from universal in NJ. There are plenty of shooters and hunters once you leave the cities. And the Star Ledger is a worthless soon to be bankrupt liberal rag.
"Anyone over, say, the age of 20 knows the issue of guns was never heard or thought of when we were growing up. "
She was about 20 in 1968.
We need to ask the state to ban automobiles in Linden. See the article below regarding the person who posted her opinion at NJ.com... She prefers to go after police with her vehicle...
"Linden cop struck while directing traffic

Print LINDEN -- A Linden police officer was hit by a car at around noon while directing traffic as state Department of Transportation workers changed a traffic light bulb, police said.
Officer Gary Hickman was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway and released after x-rays showed he had no broken bones, according to Linden police Detective Lt. James Sarnicki.
He was struck by Susan Kloepfer, 60, of Linden, as she turned left from Wood Avenue onto St. Georges Avenue, according to Investigator David Allison of the Linden police.
Kloepfer will be charged with reckless driving and not using her windshield wipers, Allison said. Her date in municipal court is May 25."

Welcome to New Jersey Tam!
"Far-flung farmers"??
How did they fling farmers back in the day--with trebuchets??
I have this image of colonial farmers zinging westward overhead like hefty cannonballs.
Makes about as much sense as the rest of the article.
And at the epicenter of that black hole is a fat man from Michigan wearing a sweaty baseball cap and a smile time-dilated into eternity.
"Hunters use rifles, not guns."
Ummm.....
Rifles aren't guns?
Ugh....now my head hurts.

The last time I was in New Jersey, I was picking up a load at a warehouse near the docks, to bring back west. One of the employees pointed out several security cameras and told me that level of surveilance is typical throughout America. I told him most of America doesn't have quite that density of cameras, but he didn't believe me.
We become accustomed to intrusions on our libery one step at a time. After a while, a pervasive controlling surveilance state, where the inhabitants are no longer citizens but inmates, becomes the new normal.
Tam,
I hope that her police, her sheriff, and her National Guard keep getting funding. And that the BATFE doesn't collect her neighbors' guns to send to Mexico or whatever.
I had a longer spiel (http://bradsworldview.blogspot.com/2012/02/we-have-police-so-guns-shouldnt-be.html), but really.
