The other morning, one of the talking heads on the television set referred to 96th Street in Indianapolis as the "Near North Side".
Like a true Broad Riparian, I blurted "'Near North Side'? 96th street is 'way out in the country. Heck, 96th Street is, like, halfway to Fort Wayne!"*
Anything north of 86th Street is "Northern Indiana" and anything south of 38th Street is "Southern Indiana".

*96th Street roughly parallels the northern leg of Indianapolis's perimeter highway, I-465, and is the boundary between Indy proper and the first 'burb to the north, Carmel.

Always thought of Washington St/US40 as bisecting Indy.
It does, and the state as well.
I'm all the way up past 146th street. So 96th is almost downtown. 86th is "The City". Going as far as US 40 is a day trip.
Going to the Bripple is a food only trip. Not much else down there, used to be in the 80's I went there to look at the freaky people, but they seem to have mostly moved on.
Woodman,
"Going to the Bripple is a food only trip. Not much else down there..."
Other than bars & restaurants, the entire economy of Broad Ripple is apparently based on doing each other's hair and selling vintage clothing.
Hah, in Pendleton apparently the local economy runs on hair cuts and prison.
There are at least 5 hair salons in a square mile up here. And three prisons in less space than that.
They've tried to make "Historic Pendleton" something like a Nashville IN, or Mass Ave. It's not really working. It's too close to Indy for a day trip, and anyone who lives out here hits the real Amish markets and the never ending yard sales to get the same thing without paying the "Antiques Made While You Wait" price.
We only have one bar too, which seems weird.
Perspective is an odd thing. MCAS Miramar is often referred to as being in San Diego's north county. Those of us who lived 20 miles north of there, still in San Diego County and still at least 10 miles south of the county line, always thought Miramar's "north" designation was a touch off kilter.

In other words, BR is just full of apes with clothes? Got it.
It depends on your perspective, all right. I grew up on 146th; then I moved to 116th(ish); now I live on 96th. Broad Ripple is halfway to downtown. That's south, baby.
As someone that used to live north of 116th in Fishers, anything south of 96th St and north of 38th St is "quaint", and 38th to 10th is "here there be dragons."
