QotD: Gentlemen's Blood Edition

From Roger, The Real King Of France:
I will argue that this toxic atmosphere was far better than the "comity" we now suffer. No law passed without a fight is far preferable to the nanny state. If the Bladensburg dueling grounds were still active, a whole generation would today have no clue about the names Pat Leahy, Ted Kennedy, or Chuck Schumer.
Perhaps we could get legislation through exempting elected officials from the laws against dueling?

Sort of reminds me of Herbert's Dosadi Experiment. On the Gowachin home world, the lawyer that wins in court is executed by the winning lawyer. Maybe any lawmaker should care enough about a law to be willing to die to see it passed! :-)

Or was that "loses"...I got confused...

Bad assumption regarding the dueling. The whole concept of dueling was built around a gentleman's "honor" and affront to it. When dealing with the likes of Schumer, Leahy, Durbin, et. al. you are absent the first requirement of the dueling code.

Ed beat me to it; anyone actually think any of those clowns would have the honor or courage to face a challenge?

Something like the Thunderdome would be more appropriate, with taser-armed lanistae to keep them in action.

LCB: I like your first version better.

Yeah ... whatever Andrew Jackson's other shortcomings, he had physical courage. I can't imagine any of these geriatric piles of afterbirth ever showing up for a duel. Them days is gone.

The notion of a politician's Thunderdome does have a certain charm, though. Mmmm - Chainsaws.

If the Bladensburg dueling grounds were reactivated, conservatives would need those 600 yard Marine 1911s and the Democrats involved would all have the holes in their backs.

Dueling is far too honorable.

Dueling is for gentlemen.
Politics is for rabble.

But do we HAVE to Hold Elected Office to Play? I mean, even if Schumer showed up, what if he drew Lugar in the First Round?

This has possibilities. It might even attract a better class of scoundrels to politics. Anything to return the focus to the legislative body and away from the search for the perfect maximum leader. Even Ron Paul can never restore liberty by executive order.

"Even Ron Paul can never restore liberty by executive order."

A fair statement.

I read a Sci-Fi story recently where on a Planet called "New Texas" simply killing an elected official was no cause for a charge of murder, more likely a cause for public approbation. I sat and dreamed for hours after finishing that story.

I vote for H. Beam Piper's 'A Planet for Texans', where politicians can be shot by their constituents for enacting (or attempting to enact) bad laws.

Tweel: In the Piper story, New Texan politicians can be shot by their constituents for enacting ANY laws.

Wish they would reopen the duelo. There would be a lot less rogues, rascals and scoundrels present in DC. ;)

Hate to dash all your wet dreams of dead politicians, but the Code Duelo prohibits offering a challenge to, or accepting one from anyone who is not "a gentleman". Rogues, rascals, scoundrels, shopkeepers and petty thieves may be horsewhipped where they are found in the streets, or dragged out of their habitation in order to horsewhip them. While by and large today's politicians do not even rise to the level of those just listed the notion of dragging them out into the street to horsewhip them sends a tingle up my leg.

stay safe.

Ok, the frame on the Lipard is made of S7, which is a great tool steel for making jackhammer bits and Scrapyard Knifeworks knives...

But it sux for wear, great for resisting repeat impact stress but not known for long wear (especially not at 46 rockwell). Something like a A8 or A11 would be better.

Then again, I guess the point of some of that is simply to awe the potential buyer of a pistol design drawn before the advent of CNC machining with more "alphanumeric mumbo jumbo" to help them swallow the price tag.

Ahem.
Refer to the Ellington Protocol and the Code Duello.
Just ask any Manticoran citizen with the name "Harrington." :)
Cheers.

After the Canon's sermon last night, and holding hands and praying with him, I am feeling amazingly mellow, and willing to delope if I ever meet my ex-brother again.
