"Under 25 with absolutely no knowledge of history" is flamingly redundant.

Most of the "youngins" I deal with think Bill Clinton is the GOM of the Dem Party.
JFK is a mythological figure from history. Grandma keeps an icon of him over the kitchen table.
FDR is a shadowy form from the Creation Myth sometimes confused with Woodrow Wilson.

I dunno Ed, I was a medieval history buff by the time I was 13...

... but then again I'm not american, and my age is now the reverse of those numbers.

Mr. Rasimus,

While your contempt for my generation is understandable, I must object to your sweeping generalisation. While you don't know me from Adam, please take my word that, while not in the majority, there are plenty of young people who have more than a passing familiarity with American, and world history.

That being said, Mr. Edwards is either extremely poorly educated (Thank you Dept. of Ed.) or is a satirist.

Sorry for the double post.

The science fair one was hilarious... :-)

And the NK missile launch? It's going to get shot down (one way or the other)...

jetaz,

I have no contempt for your generation. I regularly interact with the next generation of USAF warriors and they are core 25 year old, well educated, dedicated professionals. Unfortunately I also teach government at a nearby community college--I've done that for about 12 years now in Colorado and Texas and there I encounter an abysmal lack of education on history, literature, communication or government. My generalizations are not sweeping and my comment was an exaggeration strictly for humor.

As soon as I saw Tam's post this evening, I knew there's be 3 things in the comments:
1) A boomer condescending about kids these days, extra points if he talked about how they all wanted praise without earning it, dagnabit.
2) A young person calling him out.
3) Said boomer walking it back, possibly with a troops reference, but standing by his claim.

Right on all 3, no extra point.
Please don't generalize, Mr. Rasimus- I went to Rampart and UCCS, in your town, and got quite a solid foundation in history. But every generation thinks they stole fire from the Gods; some are closer to the truth than others.

Ah. In that case I apologise. I did not understand that it was intended to be humorous.

Blah, blah, blah. Speaking as a Baby Boomer, we grew up listening to the so-called "Greatest Generation" laud itself to the heavens for all the stuff they did until we were sick of it. "My Dad kicked Hitler and Tojo's ass and all I got was this lousy Cold War!" So now here I sit, listening to Glenn Miller and Bennie Goodman, reading Heinlein and wishing we still had movie makers like Frank Capra...
Maybe, as You Kids go about getting off my lawn, you should be less self-absorbed. I realize that My Generation didn't set a real good example about that, try improving on it instead of continuing the decline.

It's almost like these snotty Faceboogers don't know that you could tell the season by if an AOLer were wearing socks or not.

Golly, Dirt Sailor, you compliment my by calling me a boomer--I'm a bit older. I didn't condescend, I snarked. No mention about them wanting praise, earned or otherwise. I didn't walk it back. And the troops reference is not gratuitous. I'm qualified. Google me.

Sorry, Tam.

FDR is a shadowy form from the Creation Myth sometimes confused with Woodrow Wilson.

Hard to tell the difference, given that one's Lucifer, and the other is Mephistopheles.

there should have been a Cthulhu reference in the bear display. just sayin.

"The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress." - Socrates (allegedly)

Although it would doubtless violate some obscure bylaw on the label of my wookie suit (do not remove under penalty of natural law, etc.), I was thinking that what would make the Hermit Kingdom's missile demonstration really neat is if someone shot it down during boost phase.

Pour encourager les autres, as it were. (Assuming, and all....)

I loved the Time Bandits reference in the teddy bear experiment.

Question to pose for future experiments: Are teddy bears more or less susceptible to the effects of Pure Evil?
