No, what threw me into paroxysms of avarice was that Colt Competition "Pro 18" on the left. With the eighteen-inch barrel and rifle-length gas tube and Geissele trigger, the thing shot like it was thought-controlled. Combined with the can it was wearing, it hardly moved under recoil. After running a couple mags through it, I had the wantsies so bad that I was a little dazed, else they would have needed a crowbar to get it out of my fingers.
Dear Santa: I have been very, very, very good this year...
(Also: First time I've used one of those 45° offset mini red dots combined with a low-power scope to shift back and forth between closer and farther targets. That's a pretty trick little feature.)

Did you like the the red dot-low power scope combo? Would you recommend it as a useful accessory? I've never actually fired a rifle with this set up but wouldn't mind dropping some dough on a set up if it actually works well and doesn't just look high speed.

I love that Colt is finally getting competitive in the AR game and putting out some interesting and unique product.

Mind you, the Colt Competition AR's are custom built by a smaller racegun company that received a license from Colt.
They are nice guns and I do want, but the "If it's not a 6920LE, it's a copy!" crowd is going to call these "copies".

Depending on what you were using the gun for, I think it'd be the berries.
On a home-defense gun, the scope is pretty unnecessary, and on a target or varmint rifle, you really don't need a dot, but for a general-purpose range toy or a dedicated 3-gun gun? Heck, yeah.

I picked up Jerry Miculek's carbine DVDs a while back and that 18" on rifle gas setup is the one he uses. Sounded like a good idea when he said it and this only confirms it.
I really need to get rid of a few entry ARs. With the upgraded rifles I've switched into it's starting to look like a ar15.com thread around here.
i had wondered about this scope/red dot set up and had contemplated making one for a couple of years now. you had me at "it'd be the berries."
if you'll excuse me, i need a couple more pieces-parts.
I haven't bought a new firearm in almost 3 years(having an empty house on the market for 22 months can do that too you.)
This looks like a good one to break my drought on...kind of a go big or go home, especially since we've been able to have cans in Washington since earlier this year...
Just be aware that the scope/red dot combo puts you in Open Div in 3gun. So you need a race pistol and tricked out Saiga/Alfalfa/speed-loader (and optic) equipped shottie.

The CTC event being my first 3-gun match, I was somewhat appalled at the apparent craptastic reliability of the Saigas. This made me sad.

Ah, there is much shootey goodness in a .308 AR. The ability to send 168 grain projectiles downrange with accuracy to P--- off the bolt gun shooter next to you, 5 rd groups that you can cover with a nickel. The soft recoil and the fact that you didn't have to do anything to the rifle to get such good results.
The problem with the Saiga 12gs is that plastic 12g hulls tend to deform in box magazines.
Unless you reload into all brass shells, Saigas will continue to have problems if you leave the magazines loaded for a few days in advance.
