RX: "Well. That's certainly... odd and pretentious."
Me: "What, my whole blog?"
RX: "Yes, the whole entire thing."

$35 for a plain wood axe handle! Odd and pretentious is right. They aren't even particularly pretty axes. Some folks have more money than sense.
ReplyDeleteThey're selling genuine imitation rustic ambiance. I wonder what I could get for Grandpa's beat up old tackle box knife.
ReplyDeleteBest of all, they have CLASSES on AXE SHARPENING.
ReplyDeleteOy. If you get to be thirty and you don'tunderstand how to sharpen an axe you might want to stick to pulling lattes. And guys that are in the habit of using axes don't buy $600 waxed jackets, they wear carhartts.
And what exactly is wrong with odd when combined with pretentious?
ReplyDeleteIt isn't nearly as annoying as boring combined with humble.
+1 on Og...LOL
ReplyDeleteI'd have a really hard time buying anything made for the Great Outdoors from a proprietor based in NYC, regardless of their origins.
ReplyDeleteThat whole website reeks of pretentiousness.
Let's see...
ReplyDeleteClassic Buck 110 folding knife:
Cheaper than Dirt: $40
Best made: $140
PT Barnum lives!
This guy must have testicles the size of bowling balls to sell a Buck G-10 lockback for $138.
ReplyDeleteThen again maybe I could move there. I'm sure I could sell them even faster with my gen-u-wine Mizzurah drawl.
I thought the same about the $1.59 Coghlan's match safe for $9.00.
ReplyDeleteLet's see...
Some of the things are priced about right. The Eschenbach compass (mis-named "lensatic cruiser compass" but then just about everything in the product description is wrong) is the going rate, though you can get one slightly different but just as good for around $30. The latter, made by Konustar and offered by Optics Planet, is one of my favorites.
The Peanut lighter is $6 less at countycomm.com.
I'm just jealous I didn't think of it first.

+1 also to Og. Even professional axe men. Too wedded to their chain saws, I guess. I can hear the ghost of my Uncle Cliff (in his thick Dahn East accent) "Ah ya cuttin' that log, er beatin' it inta submission?"
ReplyDeleteHave you ever seen anybody on TV (on the home shows, I mean) swinging an axe (or a sledge) who knew WTF they were doing? They all swing that like they were afraid of it -- surrendering power for the illusion of control.
M
Won't be long before I see that "X" logo on wannabes walking around.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the logo needs moved the rear shoulder for maximum "look at me!" effectiveness.
I kinda liked the japanese Combo p38 can opener / bottle opener for $16. But the height of ludicrousness was the folding wooden rulers at $45 or the simple wooden rulers for $24. Pair of scissors for $76 runs pretty high on the WTF meter too though.
ReplyDeleteHeh - I clicked on the link, then got distracted by something shiny and went off to do something else for a few minutes. Came back and couldn't remember why this odd web site was on my 'pooter. Paging through their inferior and overpriced offerings, I said "This is stupid. Why would anybody pay money for this?" And then I hit the back arrow to remind myself why I was even looking at this. "Oh."
ReplyDeleteOdd and pretentious, forsooth.
Heck you could get an Exotac match case at Amazon for half that price and be "tacticool" as well!
ReplyDeleteYou realize of course that if you lived in NYC you'd have to have a Best Made Co. axe, right? After all, it is the ONLY sharp edged tool that is chic enough that your friends won't judge you. Also, it's pretty much the only defensive tool on the planet that is legal. Just be careful if you hold it with two-hands you might violate the no more than 7 rounds (fingers?) of ammunition rule.
ReplyDeleteCome to think of it seven fingers is about right for NYC. No more than seven fingers of ammunition, seven fingers to swing an axe, or seven fingers of soda either.

I have matches in an old pill bottle.
ReplyDeleteMark Alger, thanks for the phrase: "surrendering power for the illusion of control." Nice clarity, goes well with my second cup of coffee.
ReplyDelete-Erik from Seattle
It's a company for separating ignorant hipster doucebags from their trust funds..
ReplyDeleteBTW, the Axes are, AFAIK, made by Snow & Neally, as the company owner mentioned in an interview that they were made in Maine, and S&N is the only Axe maker in that state..
Hmmm... http://cspoutdoors.com/snownealour3.html Snow & Neally "Our Best"? At $62.95 retail Best Made is making a good margin.
