Important tip: Don't cross the streams.

Remember that the sight plane of the AR-15 is a few inches above the bore axis. This can be important.

Imagine every molecule in your 442 exploding away from you at the speed of light.

Important safety tip. Thanks Egon.

They are supposedly just about ready to start Ghostbusters 3. My hat is off to Tam for the timely reference, and to the shooter for disclosing his painful mistake. I am eagerly awaiting the snafu that brings out slime quotes.

Well, maybe he'll get by with a new cylinder assembly and yoke. He did learn, confess, and illustrate the lesson for us.

If the latch is jammed as he described, I'd suspect there is also frame damage.

good to know; it could be...bad. and he's lucky he didn't create a new kind of nd...an ndd? negligent double-discharge.

i appreciate that post...makes me feel like less of a duckin' fummy for my three nd's spanning 30 yrs, including the one where i shot a sizable hole in the concrete floor of my store while showing a 645 s&w to a deputy after dropping the mag and clearing the chamber...except i think i might've (cough) reversed those.

okay, okay...so i actually was a duckin' fummy; not so much anymore though, that unexpected explosion from a .45 hot load kind of gets your attention...not to mention the cop's; his eyes still get wide when he sees me.

Looking at the pics, I'd guess a terminally bent crane. If he's lucky, all it will need is a new cylinder ass'y. If he's not, they'll need to jack up the front sight and slide a new gun under it...

About 10 years ago, I get 1/5th credit for a .380 Silvertip out of a PPK into the floor of the pawn shop.

I didn't hand the customer the gun, but it passed through my hands on the way to the showcase without a chamber check. I'll tell the story in a post sometime...

I shoot over the hood of my pickup often. Did it just yesterday. It makes a rather nice field expedient shooting bench. I'd heard of some guy cutting a crease across his hood years ago, so I always keep that in mind. Gotta watch out for those antennas, too (you can't have a pickup in north Idaho unless it has at least two extra antennas). -- Lyle

Tam,

As hard as it is to believe, there are some folks that are just too stupid to own guns.

Joe,

There but for the grace of God go I.

I take it as a learning experience, and thank $DEITY that it wasn't my J-frame that got zapped.

I just got another cheap reminder of "Ees gon! Ees not safe!"

This just reminds me to get another M442 as a spare (if I can keep it away from my wife!)

See, if that had been a Ruger DA revolver, it would have been just fine (but still ugly).

I kid; I kid...

In three months that picture will be floating around the nets with a story claiming a guy shot that gun out of someone's hand.

An oops of semi-seroius proportions, but, as Somerled points out, also a lesson learned for all of us, with public Mea Culpa, which took a certain class. I haven't had that scary accidental discharge (yet).

However, once upon a time, a young Marine who looked an awful lot like a skinny adolescent me took a certain hot young lady off into the woods with intent to actually teach her how to shoot (don't get prurient).

A bit of nostalgia also, as the place I brought her was the "Ol' Shooting Pit" from my grade school to high school plinking days. I brought along 7 or 8 different weapons, we shot for an hour or two, and I left a perfectly good Martini .22 target rifle leaning against a tree, unmissed in the repacking.

Yes I went back that night, and yes it was gone. I concede a single shot rimfire rifle probably wasn't high on a gangbanger's list of "Assault Weapons", but still...

As an FYI, don't put your gun under your thigh if you think you are going to need it in a still moving car. A number of the FBI agents in the Miami shootout did that and lost their gun when the car crashed into the suspect's car during the felony stop. IIRC at least one ended up without a gun and another was forced to rely on a back up snub nose.
