I have successfully installed the new power supply in the old PC, and am off the eMac.
The hard drive is definitely making noise. I hope to have the situation rectified soon.

My understanding of electronics is limited, but wouldn't a rectifier have been of more help with the power supply situation, and substantially less helpful with the hard drive?
Get a copy of Acronis hard drive ghosting software. It's only 30 bucks, and you'll need a new hard drive and an empty drive bay, or an external USB enclosure. Boot up to the Acronis disk and go through the steps to make a clone of your hard drive. Should do this before you have complete hard drive failure.
Turn the radio up.
Get a backup while it still works, definitely.
After that, RAID 1 if you can.

IBM IntelliStation discussion still active?
seriously,
If you can boot up a Ubuntu or Knoppix disk and haz the mad skilz to use the awesome power of `dd` , then do so posthaste.
Otherwise, maybe one of those other "Ghosting" programs will work.
G98,
I just sent you a PM. :)
Roger that.
Game plan hashed out in response. ;-)
