In the heat of the night...

The jet stream must have cracked like a bullwhip.

After being buried under an arctic air mass that had daily highs twenty degrees below normal for days on end and the black dirt frozen hard as concrete, a bulge of warm air passed through the middle of America like a pig through a python, bringing warm rain and fog and unseasonable weather, reaching a tropical-feeling 65 degrees at 0100 today, toppling the previous record of 64 set in 1947.

Unfortunately, that 65 degree temp was also the day's high temp, because the cold front that crashed through in the wee hours brought January back with a vengeance in its tree-toppling wind gusts, and they're calling for snow tonight.

No wonder Al Gore was rolling around on top of that pile of Qatari oil money, finger-wagging and chortling like a wild-eyed animatronic Buddha on the fritz despite getting a playful love-bite during that leg-humping by Matt Lauer on the Today show yesterday: His weather machine is obviously working properly.

Driving to work was fun.
Dropped the munchkin off at GrammaCare and about halfway to work...the sky opened up:

Wished for a higher setting on the wipers that didn't exist.

Hit puddles that looked like lakes and the windshield took 3 swipes of the wiper to clear.

Wind gusts blowing the rain sideways.

Good times.

And I'm in smack dab middle Ohio.

That ugly line of storms isn't here yet but the wind is howling. Got up to no power, they got it back on quick, but I'm fully expecting to lose it again.

Forecast for that tree toppling wind gusts is coming here just in time for rush hour. Really that bad, huh?

Rush hour this evening.

I hope you don't mind. I use you as a weather prediction service. What you report there I can expect here in 12-24 hours.

Except that damn Derecho last summer. Too fast.

I saw Matt interviewing Al Gore, and it looked like Matt thought he was being tough (but he wasn't)and Al gave him that big smile and patented I'm-lying-and -you-like-it-bullshit smile. He's just as slimy and hard to get the truth out of as his ex-boss at a Congress I-never-had-sex-with-that-woman hearing.

Many schools here in AL have delayed opening until after the squall line passes.

70 degrees this morning. Low tonight is forecast near freezing. Glad I split a bunch more firewood this past weekend.

I've lowered the colors and put the flag pole in the garage. Walked around the house to police debris. Bring it on!

I looked out early this morning, (0530) and the snow was blowing straight across. Makes me glad I only have to go down a flight of steps to go to work. I guess most of the schools in central Iowa are closed. Good times.

Right there with ya. Yesterday at 5AM we were at 56 with no snow to be seen on the bround anywhere. This morning . . . 24 and headed to 1 with over 6 inches of the white stuff! Winter in Iowa . . .

Here in beautiful Minnesnowta we're looking at going from right-around-freezing temperatures (it's called "taw", cause the Scandihoovians don't have a theta sound) to minus teens. I'm sure we'll be sending that cold stuff down to you a day or so after we've finished using it.

That 'splains all the new damned snow on the ground here in Wyoming.

... finger-wagging and chortling like a wild-eyed animatronic Buddha on the fritz...

Ha! It's that kind of phraseology that keeps you at the top of my daily blog reading.

We had an ice storm on Sunday, warming and decent Monday, 60+ degrees and rain on Tuesday, rain to sleet to snow as temps dropped Wednesday, expecting high of 10 degrees today with low of minus ten tonight...with wind chill warnings for minus fifty. If you don't like the wrather you have, just move to the midwest...you can have three to four seasons in the same number of days.
