Smuggler's Blues.

Three guys, including an active duty SEAL, have supposedly been busted trying to sell machine guns smuggled back from the sandbox to an undercover cop.

I'm kinda curious in regards to whom they thought they were selling the weapons. Who did the cop claim to be? A doper? Some militia dude? Just some random shooter hoping to get around the insanely inflated, artificially high prices on NFA stuff caused by the Hughes Amendment?

All the various Mexican drug lords they could have sold to at any gun show, and they picked a federal agent up from off the street?

Was I the only one amused by the headline on the CNN article? "Two men, Navy SEAL arrested for firearms trafficking".

I have much respect for SEALs, but surely in all their awesomeness they still count as 'men', don't they?

"Trafficking" yeah, right. Probably just some Joes brought a couple AKs back like we've been doing forever and went to get some beer $ and didn't really know who to approach. Plenty of good stuff that's C&Rhas come back that kept under radar. Some Nazi marked P35s from Iraq, and Martini Henry's from Afghanistan, blah, blah blah.
Like the cartels have to go to gunshows.

But, but I read on gun nut boards that no guns are being brought back from the Middle East.

*snicker* If the feds only knew what was coming back in.

Mustabeen one of those Gun-Show loophole guys - how else am I gonna get one, and grenades?

Doesn't matter really; it's all about the money and dumbass ways to get it.

I like anon 7:21's beer money theory the best, though:

"What, we're outa brewskis? I'll fix that, hold mah beer an' watch this..."

Just further proof that nothing, including advanced education and exhaustive training, can fix Teh Stupid.

How's about just hiding them for your own possible later use? That seems less risky and more sensible.

I read another article stating that they smuggled in about 80 rifles and were selling them for $1300 a piece.

Keep in mind that during Democratic administrations the BATFE has a history of ginning up cases (with unreliable informants) to help in the funding wars. BATFE usually doesn't do well in the funding battles because they are the police in charge of legal stuff, and they don't rake in tons of cash like the IRS. Pretty much poor sisters all round.

Don,

"Keep in mind that during Democratic administrations the BATFE has a history of ginning up cases (with unreliable informants) to help in the funding wars."

Like they did with Randy Weaver during the Democratic Bush administration? ;)

I have no trouble buying as plausible what went down here, it doesn't require any complex frame-up. As far as whether it's factual, well, that's for a jury to decide.

Maybe now the SEAL can find a ghostwriter and publish a series of lurid, Bolan-esque adventure novels.

Red Splinter Real Team Six!

And if he gets a felony, he can pose with an airsoft MP5K on the cover, just like Tricky Dick did!

Maybe Furry the Teu-Ton-Ic...Pan-Da! is available for a ghost writing postion?

The local news, both Fox and NBC, Are breathlessly reporting that:

"He has recently been seen working on the set of the Transformers 3 movie and therefore he must be a very high ranking member of the Navy Seals."

I want to find a brick wall...

In other news I'm curious what exactly went down with ftroop.

Didn't John Kerry accidently admit to doing the same thing?

I don’t think anyone in my unit brought anything home – we heard nonstop threats for two weeks before we left.

This article claims that they thought they were selling them to smugglers. But you are just getting the prosecutors' side at this point.

Chas S. Clifton,

See, that's the kind of thing that would influence me were I on a jury.

Did they think they were selling to bad actors? Or were they just subverting a dumb and unconstitutional law for fun and beer money?

I met the shark man of the delta once. He wanted to fondle my glock. I told him, with a smile, that I didn't want to contribute to the delinquency of a felon.

Despite his laugh, I don't think he liked my response.

Happened on our ship back in '84. Coming back from Grenada / Beruit, and the Shore Patrols found some AKs and a box of grenades hidden away. I'm sure there were others that were not found. They did let the Marines keep bolt action rifles that were captured from the cubans though.

What; is there some law against selling machineguns to undercover cops? Where does it say that? Wait; were the guns stolen? -- Lyle
