QotD: Scope of the Problem Edition

Billy Beck, in a post on the ultimate cost of the lack of knowledge of values, dropped this line:
If cars were the social menace here, you people would be arguing about what colors to prohibit.

There is no way that resort to non-essential trivialities is going to address this matter.

Billy Beck's comment just before that one, "You don't understand: Adam Lanza is "the end game"" would look good on a tee shirt.

Of course, having that on a black tee shirt would probably get you detained for questioning in many jurisdictions, and there's no way you're getting on that airplane, buddy!

EXACTLY, Chris.

They want an obedient citizenry that plays along with their game. Adam Lanza just happened to be one of the Reavers.
God only knows which chemicals being allowed into our food supply or released into our air are the Pax, but the feel-good nonsense that supplants actual education in our public schools certainly can claim a healthy share of societal rot.

Oops. Hit "enter" insted of "shift."

I don't know. The bIg Question I have is this: In the "New and Improved AWB of 2013," are they going for the Cosmetics, or are they going for the Mechanics of the System?

Something tells me that the Enemy might have learned their lesson from the last time. We'll just have to see what's in the Bill when Feinstein brings it out in a couple of weeks.

"Taking Adam Lanza as only one extreme example of the cultural psychosis, now: that kid was somehow brought to an adult age without ever having been taught what values are. "

When you're talking about someone with a head full of bad wiring, it doesn't matter what 'values' you or anyone else tries to teach them. Though, I do agree with the soundbite you posted.

deadcenter,

Here's the thing, though: Neither mental illness nor magazine-fed firearms are a new thing (although gun control largely is.)

What kept disturbed kids in the '50s from wandering into the cafeteria with a mail-order M1 carbine and laying waste?

Um, a high probability of return fire??

Quoting myself from FB:

"...Disarming otherwise law-abiding citizens and banning scary-looking weapons will not prevent the another Sandy Hook. No engineer would would attempt such an outside-in approach to such a problem; there are over 80 million gun owners and at least 250 million guns in America. A tiny fraction are used in crime. An even tinier fraction could be used in an inside-out approach to making schools safer."

Um, my quote above was in the context of allowing teachers, etc with CCWs to carry at school.

Not that the hoplophobes of either sex or the teachers unions would hold still for THAT.

To add one other thought, when we talk about allowing teachers, etc with CCWs to carry at school. not enough people are hearing the "etc". We should expressly add other staff. Not just the principal and the assistants, but don't forget coaches and janitors.

I don't know what changed in the late 60s or early 70s that caused the change. I'm a geologist, not a medical scientist. Looking at history, making commitment more difficult seems to be a contributing factor.

Another difference is the rate at which we are dosing the kids with meds. I've seen the reports that say the brain isn't fully developed until the early 20s, yet we're more than willing to dose them with drugs that alter the chemistry of that developing brain. Meds that were developed in a lab based on tests run on a lab animal then tested again on a carefully selected trial population.

Most of the recipients do fine, some don't. Are we seeing the ones that don't? I don't know if they're on meds or not, but it's clear we're looking at the tails not the middle of the curve. On meds or off meds, I haven't seen enough reporting to find out if there's a link. Too many unknowns.

Sorry, but in the end, I don't have an answer. Just a lot of questions.

Just a silly question, but what data do you have that kids didn't shoot up schools in the good ol days?

Anon 11:51,

"Just a silly question, but what data do you have that kids didn't shoot up schools in the good ol days?"

You'd think it would be mentioned on this list of school shootings in the US or mentioned elsewhere in the debate, but it's not.

If they happened, they're a better-kept secret than the cattle-mutilators on ice in Roswell.

I lived in those days, you idiot.

Shut the fuck up.
