Who knew?

The reaction on the internets to the most recent 1911 post has been hilarious. Apparently it's a pretty Rorschach piece of writing, because it's had me accused of everything from being an emotional and nostalgic defender of the 1911 to a "homo glock-lover"...

Who knew?

The level of fail in this post reaches new heights, even for the internet, to the point where I almost hope it's someone from here posting in satire :)

Crap! I was about to trade off my Glock 30 for an M&P45c or an HK45c for my trips to the in-laws. Now I feel like I have to keep it just to piss these guys off. Even better, I could add a micro 1911 with a 3" barrel and "full length" guide rod (I'm kidding, Ed Foster, don't stroke out) to the LCP "if you're using me, you're in REALLY deep shit" pocket gun.

Now I've pissed EVERYBODY off, and written a horrendous sentence doing it. But carrying a backup gun to the backup gun would make people I actually do respect happy, so perhaps I'll carry the micro 1911 completely unloaded with no mag. In Thunderwear.

As for who or what anybody else loves or wants to have consenting adult relations with, ain't none of my damn business as long as you don't do it on my front lawn. And I've known and count as friends some freaky people who I want next to me when Bad Stuff happens.

Bonus points to your relationship if it makes you less of a d*ck. I don't think theirs is working that way.

My work here is done. Booyah.

What a fun way to start the day. I never knew gunbroker had a forum.

A while back, Alan had a 'you just might be a mall ninja...' thing going on. I'd guess all which would be offended by that thread are the ones hanging out at the gunbroker forum.

Sometimes a truckload of insecurity & fail is a fascinating & humorous thing to see.

I don't have a 1911 any more, but still have a 220 Match and a P97 clunker...two completely opposite ends of the spectrum; am I schizophrenic?

That's an idea: a gun-themed self-help blog. Call it "Dear Tam" and RX can be your alter ego, a la Abby and Ann.

"Dear Tam: there's some obviously insane undeveloped egos over at the gunbroker forum. A weekend range session is planned, and we fear that some of them might show up. Whatever shall I do? And do you recommend the merlot over the shiraz? Signed, Laughing in gunblog land" "Dear Laughing: go away, kid. You bother me. And, it's shiraz with steak tartar. Cheers! Tam."

Ed Foster said...

Wow! They sure are out there, aren't they! I'd have to say the religion reference is about spot on.

And the 8# trigger was the one John Browning put on the military gun for cavalry usage a hundred years ago, not what's on the gun now, or that's been on any decent commercial models in the last century.

The original hammer engagement was essentially a hook you had to force up and over the sear. I'll cheerfully email a copy of the original G.I. blueprint to anybody who wants it. Try me at blogspot/the only choice.

Basis statement of personal likes. I think plastic recievers and roller blowback are both steps back from effective pistol use, in the only instance when a pistol is other than an encumbrance.

In point of fact, I think the roller delayed lockup, in rifle or pistol, is one of the most innately rediculous firearms ideas perpetrated in the 20th century.

Other than that, there isn't much difference in any of them except for ergonomics (often a very personal choice), material used, heat treatment, and the quality of manufacture and final fit-up. If it can be made manually, it can be made CNC cheaper, and comparative cost is primarily a function of the size of the run.

In the same numbers, I can machine a 1911 slide for about the same as any other comparably dimensioned slide. It isn't magic.

It costs just about a grand to manufacture a top of the line 1911. That's a forged slide and reciever from Bourdon Forge, lapped to fit. That's a Kart barrel filed in slowly with dyechem and needlefiles, a meticulously hand fitted Ed Brown thumb safety and Chip McCormick grip safety, plus almost four manhours of expensive gunsmithing.

Tack on the 10% excise tax and 12%markup for what is essentially a custom gun right from the factory, and you end up with a dealer's cost in the low teens.

With a cast reciever, a barstock slide, MIM parts, and a "drop-in" barrel, we could cut costs in half, and produce a loose gun that would wobble and peen itself sloppy(er) in a few thousand rounds. If it makes a buck, there's nothing innately wrong with that, you're giving people what they're paying for, a light duty weapon for light duty prices.

But folks already make guns like that. To one extent or another, the cost vs. durability metric figures strongly in every gun out there retailing for under a grand. I've worked in big gun companies and I've seen the tradeoffs management has ordered.

Personally, I like snug, smooth, consistent, workmanlike guns. I would rather have an older SIG or Browning Hi-Power than a cheap 1911, because if you can't hit paper with it you can't hit anything else, and workmanship translates into both accuracy and longetivity.

But the higher end 1911 market does appeal to people attracted to the, shall we say, sturdy view of pistol construction. Son #2's German wonder gun shot itself apart after only a few months of serious usage, and never had either the practical or target accuracy he could have gotten from other brands. Too much emphasis on "I'm new" in all the funny angular guns, rather than "I'm better".

I once bought a collection of pistols which had a Glock, whichever model comes in .45ACP. It shot okay, as good as I'd want. Good gun, near as I could tell from a couple of magazine's worth of shooting.

But it's not as ergonomically righteous or as aesthetically pleasing to me as my ancient 1911 that I tweaked on myownself--reasons enough for my choice as any.

So I don't worry about my 1911. It's the guy in front of it who has to worry.

I was seriously thinking about putting my experience of the M1911A1 we had in my Arms Room while I was an Armorer in Korea. It was our Battery Commander's. Complete rattletrap, parts replaced more than George Washington's hatchet, with a trigger that reminded me of nothing so much as trying to type "Q" on my old manual Remington typewriter.

I kept on reading, though, and remembered my policy about talking firearms with other people's children.

One need look no farther than the fellow on the gunbroker blog ("coltpax?") who posted a photo of an SKS with a Tapco stock, 30rd detachable mag and bipod, right after a Jeff Cooper quote.

How can Reason and Truth hope to have any influence over someone who will put such an absurd contradiction in his signature line?

I spend about as much time in forums like that as I do in malls. It's like traveling to a different planet, an anime planet where weapons load themselves, the bad guys can't shoot straight and everything works the way you think it ought to work.

But NO!! it is apparent that the underside of rocks is still infested with the 'sturdy yeomen" [killer quote, that] It's all for a good laugh, but cheeze-whiz Gunbrokerites: I really liked Tam's exegesis and references on the 1911.

In fact, I thot it was one of the best informed and smartest bits i have read in quite some time about the Auld Venerable Beastie. After reflecting on it, my opinion of what might constitute a reasonable new 1911 in my stable was greatly simplified. And as a corollary, I wondered when a reputable gun-rag might offer her a paper column?

The Gunbroker Swarm is waaaay over their entire collective heads, here. But then with their lack of inter-skull content made manifest by the howling outer darkness, who really GAF? Other than for the genuinely funny, if inadvertent, comedic element of the whole episode.

Tam, that was a really good article, which informed even an old know it all like me, that indeed, I did not know it all. Of course, i still retain a limited capacity for learning, so that prob'ly explains the outcry from GB, where apparently that higher mental functioning is banned.
