Two Minutes' Hate.

Watch as famous Smart Person Bill Maher warms up the crowd by denouncing Emmanuel Goldstein. See how the Smart crowd (which includes, I would be willing to bet, at least one graduate of a Women's Studies program,) cheers its approval.

Imagine the howls of outrage if this was some conservative commentator using that term to describe, say, Hillary or Michelle. For that matter, imagine a crowd full of arugula-deprived Dittohead squares reacting with approval to the use of the word "twat" in public.

Way to keep the discourse elevated, there, Bill. You wouldn't know the high ground if the quaestores ordered you hurled off of it.

My first reaction was "Hey! Another double standard!" But I am obviously an unenlightened clod.

The moment you accept an acting role in "Cannibal women in the Avocado Jungle of Death" you throw away any vestige of credibility you may ever have had, except among bong water drinkers.

In the interest of fair discourse and scientific neutrality, I think an experiment is in order before making such a harsh declaration. I propose we hurl Maher off a series of increasingly high cliffs until a solid dataset is achieved. My rough estimation is that it shouldn't take more than ten or twelve drops before we've got the necessary data to start drawing objective conclusions.

Unless you tell me he's about to be hit by a bus, you will never convince me to click on a Bill Maher video.

Hi there Tam.
I recently subscribed to your blog and I am truly appalled to see such behavior be cheered on. Being a Brazilian, I don´t know much about Bill Maher, but apparently I am not missing much.

I haven't seen Bill Maher in years. Was he always so fey? I mean, he tells a single (pretty weak) joke, but most of the laughs come from his arm-flapping and head-waving. He's almost mincing. I remember him standing still and delivering (sometimes) perceptive and funny commentary on current events. This is sad; it's no trick to poke fun at Emmanuel Goldstein.

B.M. has to seriously over-compensate to divert his core audience's limited attention span from his non-PC treatment of Islam and that Congress-tool Ellison last week.

Just watch; if he takes enough heat, he'll claim he was trying out a UK-oriented joke since the word twat is more commonly used in ordinary conversation and live comedic entertainment there (or was in my now seriously-out-of-date experience).

Likewise don't want to subject myself to Maher's blithering. The only way you'd get me to open the link would be to title it "Sarah Palin backhands Bill Maher" which I'd gladly pay to see...

Never did find him funny over the years. I'd like to see him say that to her face; she'd probably kick his ass.

She has more class than to resort to violence.

I like the fact he fancies himself as a witty guy. He is at best half right.

Bill clearly needs someone to punch him, squarely in the face.

And hard.

And in public.

I guess Todd Palin could play Andrew Jackson and call on Maher to put up or shut up.

My belief is that is only done among equals and Little Bill should just be beaten with a cane about the head and shoulders.

The guy with the huge droopy schnozz is making fun of someone? If you punch him in the nose you'll break his finger.

Maher is SOOO lucky he's living in America at this time. If the Right-Wing Fascists ever take over this country, he's among the First to be shot. If the Left-Wing Commies take over this country, they'll be a little power play until the Fearless Leader has taken Power, then Maher will be shot. If the Extreme Religious Al-Queda types take over, he'll be Beheaded, then shot. Only in a Fundamentally Transformed America can Maher spew his misogynist Hate Speech Against Women and not have the Justice Department prosecute him for violating the Law, nor have the Great Leaders of the Women's Movement such as Hillary Rodham denounce him for the Sexist Pig because of his attacks on their Sister Sarah. Thank God Arriana Huffington won't put up with his Hate Speech!

Dumb twat? sOK; Maher is a stupid schmeckl who thinks with his schmecklkopf. As for the crowd, you evidently didn't get the memo. Verbal abuse against Womyn (TM) is absolutely forbidden. Against the merely biologically female, notsomuch.

So, what is a 'twOt'???? If he's going to use colloquialisms he should at least attempt to pronounce them in the correct manner, the wanker.

PS Who is Mr Maher by the way? When I lived in the US I never really heard of him...

Tam said...

Rusty Ray,

He pronounced it right for its stateside usage, where it is a colloquialism of an entirely different sort.

Quas...hey! I've heard that word! A year and a half of reading, and I can finally start to understand some fraction of what Tams says. Awesome... :)

To Mr. Maher .... *sigh*
You know, I think I agree with Mr Whittle. That much venom in one soul, just... brings a sympathy ache to the soul. He just sort of screams "angry hurt little boy" to me in those monologues of his. :(

Jen,

I was afraid that Tarpeian rock jokes before 0800 might be a bit too esoteric, but I ran with it anyway. :)

If the Romans could play fast and loose with the definition of sedition and use the justice system to settle personal scores, why can't I?

He lost any shred of sympathy from me when his "comedy tour" had a stop in Chicago due to his historical ignorance. To wit, the joke of his played in the radio commercial "The last time Republicans saw this many black people on stage (referring to the 2004 RNC stage) they were selling them!"

Talk about blazing away one too many brain cells.

Even if Sarah Palin isn't my favorite person politically, I do absolutely adore her ability to cause leftards to demonstrate rank hypocrisy.

I don't get it. He's an entertainer. He fishes for a reaction, and he gets it, doing his job. Your boys Limbaugh and Beck do it daily, as did Pee Wee Herman back when.
Like someone mentioned above he bashes Islam and supports us that still get frequent flier miles to the land of the IED as well. If you don't like it, don't watch?
Oops, that'll probably loop back to if I don't agree, don't read/comment...:-)

Andy,

"Your boys Limbaugh and Beck..."

My boys? Literally Ell-Oh-Ell! :D

You're new here, aren't you?

Maybe he meant Billy for the second half of that? ;)

Dooh, you're right, guess I jumped to conclusions. My screw up, you know, guns;right wing.(read this for the gun stuff, but don't necessarily agree with gun people, soldier thing) I hate being stereotyped, so in turn I guess I do the same. Stereotype, that is.
BUT, point still holds, he's an entertainer, that's how they pay the rent, don't like them, don't call attention to them, that's how they make $.
Like Charlie Sheen:-)

Andy,

"BUT, point still holds, he's an entertainer, that's how they pay the rent, don't like them, don't call attention to them, that's how they make $."

Point being, that a nominally Progressive audience would LOSE THEIR COLLECTIVE SHIT if a "conservative" entertainer used the word "twat" to refer to Hillary Clinton because it would be misogynistic and wrong, but is just peachy keen with it being applied to a woman they don't agree with.

Misogyny is okay as long as it's used against Those People? Hello?

Anonymous said...

Is it still misogyny if the target of the "entertainment" is the more masculine of the Clintons? "That is one butch bitch..."

How 'bout if it's poetic, like..."How now, brown cow?"
