As usual, the TeeWee cut on to the local news this morning, in time for me to see a picture of some fire blurrily raging in what appeared to be a foreign land; the shot then cut to a picture of a US supercarrier, as the voiceover said something along the lines of
"As the Koreas continue to clash, China gets involved. But first, the scores from the weekend's high school football championships and this week's weather..."
Okay, can I make a couple requests?
- Don't show quick jump-cut juxtapositions of fire, an American CVN battlegroup, and say the word "China" before my eyes have focused in the morning, okay? Please? It makes me jittery.
- While I'm sure there are people that think the state AAA football championships are more important than a potential shooting war, I'll bet if you took a poll you'd find that... wait, scratch that. Just go back to request #1 and leave it at that.

The smaller the town the odder the choice of news. I remember watching the local news here with lots of film of HS girls volleyball ending with a brief comment that they didn't have time for the World Series. Trivial but telling.
Yeah, but while Indy isn't as big as, say, NYC or LA, it's not exactly Dubuque, either.
Apparently some traditions never die, and ignoring the Korean War is one of them.
As long as they cut away to the sports you know everything is good.

Yup. It's when they cut away from the bread and circuses that you know shit done got serious.
I find the opposite more annoying. Local stations that spend time covering national stories with their own reporters.
Great way to build video resume fodder for NYFC TV stations I guess. Way to get accurate reporting on national and international events? Not so much.
If I want to see national/international news on TV, that's what I have the 3 letter (including Fox and BBC) networks on SAT for. If I've taken the effort to turn off the satellite and onto local broadcast, it's because I want to see a local story.
What finally set me completely off on the 'national news' was CBS- Dan Blather in fact- starting off one day with "Horror in the Balkans! Dozens dead in Mortar Attack on Market!! But first(in a very chirpy voice), in the OJ Simpson trial..."
