Bikes!

The State Fair featured a little display pimping the upcoming weekend's festivities at the Speedway:
Honda CBR600RR tarted up to look like Repsol Honda RC213V race bike that will be racing in Sunday's Moto GP event.

Actual Hardly-Dangerous XR1200 racebike that will actually be, you know, racing at the actual track, albeit in the supporting event.

What? No IMPD-sponsored bike?

What's funny is that your old TL had 50% more hp (120 vs 80 at the wheel), less weight (100 lbs), much better handling (rear suspension on the XR is rubber mounted and is very unsettling to ride hard) and cost less.

bedlamite,

The rotary damper on the rear of the TL was no picnic either... :o

Those guys on the XR1200s put on a good show while they're racing. I've seen them twice at Miller Motorsport Park during two WSBK weekends. Hung out and drank with several of them late into the evening in their garage while they hammered parts back together before Sunday's race last Memorial Day. Good fun.

Those Harleys can make some really loud sounds. A friends XR1000, circa '80, was measured as the loudest bike ever seen at Daytona. When it blew the packing out while accelerating on the banking, it stopped conversation at the other end of the track. Think it was 144db, but memory is fuzzy on it.

Also, not a good idea to let a 2-stroke racer ride your Harley. Can you say over-rev?

Usually, those that want to jest or deride the HD's call them Hardley Ablesons. Hardly Dangerous is a new on me. But I know what your saying, they are not even in the same class as the high revving sport bikes from Italy and Japan. I ride an HD V-twin and have ridden a v-twin Ducati 900 Monster. They were eons apart in performance.

I'm familiar with the rotary damper. It wasn't great, but at least the rear wheel is going in the same direction as the bike.

Kee Riced that brings back scary memories that make me smile sometimes. I owned an '83 XR1000 for a little while, and I swear the thing pulled so hard it'd flatten your corneas. The Eldest doesn't believe it when I tell him his new V-Rod is a pussycat in comparison.

I always kinda liked the Peoria TT because some guys would hit the jump pretty good - mainly that they even had a jump and that the track had a turn besides a left. Saw a couple Mile races but never got the total thrill.

Syl I owned a Buell X1 that I hotted up with different cams and heads plus the usual Race ECM and Header, it still makes me grin from ear to ear and I sold it in 2007. 105 RWHP and 100lb ft of torque, I've never owned a bike that could shred the rear tire so fast. I killed one in 2000 miles. Not super fast on long straights but it would come out of a corner like a rocket and it didn't really care what gear you were in. 3rd was good for corner exits anywhere between 40 and 80mph, it was pretty much all done by 120 but hell how fast do you need to go on a twisty two lane country highway. I miss that bike. The RC51 that replaced it is fun but the back end has traction until it doesn't and there is little in the way of warning before the rear tire spools up and it spits me off, I swear the thing is part Porsche 911.

The Cuban guy who visits his aged Cuban Granma across the street from me has a very nice hawg, done in minimalist style, with none of yer leather studded saddlebags, or highway pegs, and suchlike nonsense. It is all black, except for motor and exhaust pipes. Has a solo saddle, too. (I ride alone, Ma'am.)
