Call me suspicious...

This morning's two headline stories at CNN.com:

Gunman kills 5 at Utah mall, police say

and

Four dead in murders-suicide at Philadelphia firm

caused me to wonder what anti-2nd Amendment legislation is floating around Congress at the moment. Not that I'm given to wearing Reynold's Wrap yarmulkes, but whenever a national victim disarmament bill is seeking co-sponsors, a trenchcoat-clad, shotgun-wielding teen splashed all over the front page is, conveniently, never too far behind.

Just as somthing to persue, but aren't many plublic places like Malls in Utah posted "No Firearms"? Not from that part of the world, but I remember reading about it.

Just like the shootings at schools and court houses, the good people read the rules, and the goblin's don't

Don't know about malls, but in Utah, there is a battle going on over whether licensed CCW students can carry on university campus.

Mostly, it's whether or not a university chancellor's regulations trump state law.
(State law sez the CCWs can carry.)

Regardless of whether it was legal to totet there or not, a trendy, upscale, in-town boutique mall is not going to have a high percentage of CCW-toters on hand around the dinner hour, even in a gun-friendly state like Utah.

Trolley doesn't have any signs against firearms; there just didn't happen to be any CCW people there last night. There was an off-duty Ogden police officer who engaged the shooter, otherwise there may have been more bodies.
What is interesting, is that on the local news they are making a big deal about the shotgun having a pistol grip, as if that makes any difference.

Utah legislature committee is voting today on supporting a gun ban on the university requiring special lockers and posted signs and daily checks on students with permits to ensure they are unarmed. The U of U is about a mile from Trolley Square, site of last night's tragedy.

As regards the tin foil hat and legislation I think it's more a case of having any number of anti-gun bills prepared that they can introduce in response to an incident.

Kinda like the military who have plans to invade just about everyone, in case they need them.

Just for the record, aluminized mylar film is just as good as tin foil, and is much more comfortable to wear camouflaged under normal headgear ;)

"...they are making a big deal about the shotgun having a pistol grip, as if that makes any difference."

It does, IT DOES! Everyone knows that however many "evil" features a given gun has directly affects the kinetic energy of its projectiles.

I wonder how many people this horrid event will bring to the CCW cause versus how many it will harden against their best defense.

For what it's worth, my heartfelt sympathies to the families of the innocent victims.

Probably about even; a large percentage of the people in this area are immigrants from Kalifornia. They have a different viewpoint of the world than people actually from this area of the US.

BTW, I don't know if anyone else picked up on this, but the story mentioned an off-duty cop being involved in taking this fool down. This means the OD cop was likely carrying his gun concealed. Is that an unintentional acknowledgement that concealed carry might make the world a safer place? Or am I just reading too much into this?

DAL357,

You are reading it very incorrectly. It means that only cops are good enough and safe enough to carry.

Just like the limping DEA guy.

The brits admitted as much with the Dunblane massacre and the handgun ban. They had it written and ready to go, just as soon as there was an incident they could dance in the blood of.

This guy (http://arepublicifyoucankeepit.blogspot.com/2007/02/and-so-they-shamelessly-dance-in-blood.html) says it's a mall with a "No Guns" policy.

Fat lot of good it did them, eh?
