Overheard in the Hallway:

Me: "Yeah, Wash was pretty much my favorite cha... Well, I mean, I went through my phases of liking them all, but Wash was usually my favorite."

RX: "He was popular. I think the reason they killed him off..."

Me: "You know, I haven't seen Serenity."

RX: "What? How could you not have...? I have it on DVD; want to watch it?"

Me: "I'll wait 'til I've forgotten your spoilers, if it's all the same to you."

You haven't seen Serenity? That's just... wrong. I live under a rock and *I* have seen it.

I have a spare copy, if Bobbi's explodes for some reason.

I mean... SWORDS and space travel! How can you not see that?

Spoilers be damned. With Serenity, its not the ending. It the trip.

I am a leaf on the wind. :)

Seriously, watch it, don't wait. Watch it now.

I haven't seen it either. You don't want to be like me.

You haven't seen 'Serenity'?
I don't even have a television, and I've seen it eleventy-million times.
You do realise you have lost all street-cred now?
And I used to think you were one of the cool kids.
Good grief.

wv=celet, for some strange reason, when it obviously SHOULD have been
'tamneedstoseeserenitynow'.

(Shakes head) It's so disillusioning.

And that part at the end where Serenity blows up in a million pieces and they all really graphically die, but then they wake up later and it was all a dream... It always gets me. But maybe Tam just thinks she's too good to...

@ Joel

Now that is just wrong. You are such a tease!

I thought the bit where Zoe and Inara got it on in the shuttle, while awaiting rescue, was gratuitous and over-the-top kinky sex.

Also that it should have gone on for another twenty minutes.

How can any decent Wookie-Suiter not have seen Serenity?

At least you've seen Firefly. I did it backwards, Serenity first then Firefly. After I watched Firefly, I rewatched Serenity...like forty seven times.

You lot are awful. Brilliant, but awful. :-)

What I find fascinating is that Tam talks in italics.

Favorite character??? It's like picking a favorite song---impossible, because Serenity's crew are all so good for different reasons. Together, they form a harmony of their own, and a damn fine one.
I agree---see 'Serenity'. I saw the movie before I knew the series existed (talk about spoilers!), and I still love them both.

I found the part when the dead Wookie was found Mal's bedroom to be disturbing. Especially considering he had "Mrs. Reynolds" picture in his wallet.

But the subsquent scene where Jayne is skinning it to make a hat was over the top.

Shepherd Book being Badger's silent partner was a surprise at the time, but, in retrospect, there was always something a little odd about him.
Is it just me, or was anyone else surprised by Mal and Wash's tattoos? Wash's cabbage leaf was pretty good, but Mal's twister must have been painful to apply.
Mind you, when we saw them in the shower scene, it made Wash's 'I am a leaf on the wind' understandable for the first time.......

Don't wait; watch it tonight.

Joel said...

Silent partner? Which movie did you watch? Don't you remember the scene in the strip club, where even in the middle of a lap dance Shepherd Book gives us seven minutes of calm exposition in which we learn he was always an undercover agent for Blue Sun, and he was only their bagman in Badger's operation for a while? He considered Badger penny-ante! He wasn't any "silent partner."

I liked the scenes where Serenity was boarded by Rievers and Kaylee screamed "Don't you hut my engines!" just before being overwhelmed by Rievers--then Jayne came out with Vera and cleared the ones attacking Kaylee just before River came out and saw what was going on--she went into full telepathic mode and the Rievers' heads started exploding--gory but fun!

All the times I've watched it, I've never seen that scene all the way through.
As soon as Shepherd Book jumps off the stage in posing pouch and high heels and begins the lap dance, I chant 'I'll be in my room' right along with Jayne, and by the time I come back,Kaylee is demonstrating why it always a good idea to leave just enough vibration in the sonic washing machine.
Now you've got me wondering if I've missed any other important parts of the plot.....

Well, you're right about him having his quirks...

My moment like that was when I was sitting, peacefully reading a book.

Friend walks up.

Me: read read read read

Friend: "Oh, wow, that's a GREAT book! Has Felice killed Amerie yet?"

Me: "Why no, she hasn't. But thank you so very much, I really didn't see that one coming."

Curse all your inevitable treachery! Kaylee is the best!

RX is in the clear. Serenity was released in 2005, so the statute of spoiler limitations has expired.

You haven't seen Serenity! How can I make my witty and insightful comments about Jayne Austin Powers and have you spew milk out your nose when you haven't seen Serenity? Young lady, put down that computer and go to your DVD player and watch it NOW! You heard me, no soup for you! Okay, you can take your pastrami sammich, just wipe your hands before you hit replay. You try and teach them, but what do they do? Just ignore the old men who are trying to help them learn. Why back in my day, if we wanted to see a scene over, we'd first have to rewind the reel and then thread it through the sprockets....

Maybe I'm the only Firefly fan that didn't like Serenity all that much...

What? I didn't! I didn't like the treatment of the characters - Dark Mal' is far less entertaining than 'Light Mal', Wheedon's desires be damned. It depended too much on a completely new character dropped in out of nowhere - was he credited as playing Deus Ex Machina? And while I don't like the Star Trek 'everything must be the same at the end of the episode as the beginning', the treatment of the characters left me saying 'Huh?' I understand that it was the end, the final wrapup that was supposed to be years down the line of the series - but we didn't get those years, and it shows.

Also, while we're getting our scifi geek on: this. Take the guided tour.

OrangeNeck said...

Hell, even *I've* watched it. You need to watch it, Tam. Dew eet!

Matt G said...

Noah, while I agree about he Deus Ex Machina character, they can be forgiven for trying to fit in what they didn't have time to fit in, during the prematurely-canceled series.

Tamara, you didn't have to make that admission. I had already made it, two years back.

If you won't watch 'Serenity' then watch 'Freaks' and you can join our chant: One of us! One of us! One of us! It's kind of weird to see peer pressure applied ala Salem Witch Trials. We're talking PRESSURE!

Wow. I never watched Firefly (scheduling just never worked out. . . ), yet I've seen Serenity four or five times.

Back when LotR was in theaters, my sister and her friend had her friend's boyfriend convinced that Sam died at the end, and that it was really awful and sad. I think also that Sauron got the ring and the bad guys won. Had him going. They only told him the truth out of pity.

Joan of Argghh! said...

I liked when Captain Hammer hammers Miranda like a ten-penny nail. Dr. Horrible then kills the Serenity ship with his death ray and everyone ends up homeless in a shelter waiting for a shiny new Australia.

(Mark sent me here . . . blame him.)

Tam said...

Y'all are having me on, right? There's not really a wookie in there.

Carteach said...

Well, no real wookies, actually. Just Mal wearing a wookie suit as a disguise. Of course, it all got a little weird after that.

I mean.... how could he possibly do THAT in a wookie suit?

Noah D said...

Also, the explanation presented in Serenity for one of the primary antagonists in the series was mind-bendingly stupid.

Ian Argent said...

See it for one of the most awesome one-liners on God's Green Earth. Can't say more without spoiling. But it is a classic.

Joel said...

Yeah. "I've seen so much salad dressing."

Okay, it doesn't sound like much when you just type it out like that. But seriously - you had to be there. I cried.

Ian Argent said...

Well, some idiot 3 rows down when I saw it said "I don't get it" when the salad dressing line came up. Loudly. I was tempted to haul out the bowcaster...
