People will pay crazy money for anything if you put a pony on it.

El Capitan at Baboon Pirates happened to notice a Colt Paterson for sale at Collector's Firearms in Houston.

Not just any Paterson either. I mean, even the most common Paterson is a rare bird and the most wretched rustbucket of an example will sell for a nice new car price, and a Texas Paterson will bring the cost of a small house, but this was a Texas Paterson with a 9" tube, of which there were probably less than 200.

It was listed as "P.O.R." at a store which cheerfully hangs price tags on $100k+ firearms, so no telling what the asking price was. Whatever it was, someone thought it was worth it, though, because it seems to have sold already.

Seems Roy Rogers' single actions and holster rig sold at auction for six figures. Glad his family's getting the money, but yikes.

As long as that money wasn't taken from my pocket at gunpoint, the power to whoever has the loot to reel that it. I wouldn't, but to each his own.

Collectors is an interesting place. One hell of a large selection, much of which just doesn't seem to make it to their website.

I try to stop by every month or so. I'm over due actually, but I'm on the broke side.

Their prices can range from damn good to nose bleed, with most of them generally being on the higher side, with somethings just always a bit over priced.

But they have so many firearms that I've seen things I've never seen before or since while there.

Mike (the owner of Collector's) once let me handle the Commission Mauser which was the property of one Kaiser Wilhelm III.

The depth and detail of engraving, inlay and carving was astouding, bordering on the ridiculous, but it was indeed, one hell of a work of art, and a treasure.

He said there was no guessing the price, other than to presume that it's proceed at auction would clear up a healthy suburban mortgage.

Collector's is a pilgrimage for we shooters. If you can make the road trip, it's worth your while.

I'm going in this weekend to make another payment on my latest layaway purchase. I'll inquire about the amount the Paterson sold for. I'm sure that was the talk of the shop!

BTW, thanks for the Tamalanche!

Collector's is a fun place. Looking at my records they tend to get the bulk of my purchases because they have the oddball stuff I like. If you ware looking for pre-modern era (meaning plastic) firearms they have it. If you like solid N frame blued steel in a pre-war variety, where else can you walk in and handle 4 Registered Magnums in one store?

I own a Colt revolver though not antique or rare. In fact it is pretty a common and bland 4" Highwayman .357 Magnum. I will hold onto it because I like guns and just because you can't get Colts for sane prices anymore. Something American about it.
