When I was taking art courses in College (my programming career started off with the desire to write things like Photoshop. Figured 'color theory' might be useful), there was a class that was working on trompe-l'œil. One guy did a light-switch, which he place on the wall.The number of people who tried to use it was amusing.

We did a lot of painting like that in Theater, one had to be careful that the Actors didn't try to open painted-on cupboards or trip over painted-on floorboards...

Palo Alto CA, has quite a few things like that scattered around the town retail area. They are well done, and maintained by the city, IIRC.
