A customer stepped to the counter, and as I rang her up she asked "Wow, how tall are you?"
"Just about six feet."
"Oh, that's only about as tall as me. I didn't notice the raised platform and thought you were six-five or something."
"Bite your tongue! I have a hard enough time buying jeans as it is."
"Tell me about it. I just came to grips a long time ago with the fact that I was going to go through life with everyone knowing what color my socks were."
Heh. I am so stealing that line...

Nothing wrong with being tall. You stand out in a crowd.
Other than buying off-the-rack sometimes being a pain in the butt, I have no problems with being tall. When I was younger I did, but I've quite gotten over them.
My wife is 5-10, and she complains about the lack of long-legged jeans too.
I dream of finding a pair of pants I don't have to roll into cuffs to wear.
Oh well. At least I fit easily in sports cars, even if I look like one of those Fisher-Price people in the truck.
My wife is about 5-2 and Asian, so she's normally a size 0. She complains that she can't find professional office clothes anywhere because they're all sized for enormous Caucasians.
That's part of the reason why she has to go clothes shopping by herself. She's like me: go in, find it, get out. The problem is that she has to dig her way past racks and racks of size 8 to size 14 stuff to find the one size zero version of any particular thing, assuming it exists at all. By that time, my brain has locked up.
Who needs pants?!

You could just wear a skrit or a dress.
Tokarev
(ducks and runs in a sepentine manner for cover;)
I like being tall, but I mail-order most of my jeans. Wrangler seems to add a cuff allowance to their cowgirl jeans, so if I don't roll 'em, even the 34' is long enough. Barely. Up 'til I found them, I would buy the craziest socks I could find: if you're stick with showin' 'em off, they might as well be worth the looking!
"You could just wear a skrit or a dress."
Or, you could go sans skrit.
Read something a while back that would probably confirm what y'all ladies already know: Women's sizes tend to be "ballpark" rather than what's actually on the label. Something about not wanting to hurt feelings and trying to inspire brand loyalty. I don't know about all that, but it sure seems like it'd be a pain in the ass when the size is a guesstimate. Certainly explains why y'all try everything on.
If you haven't got a big old Bubba gut, you can't find Men's jeans either, 30-36s are just about impossible to find. I have better luck getting uncut jeans and trimming them up.
So what color are your socks? :)
Rabindarith: Oh. Oh ouch. Oh god, ouch.
You think 6 foot is bad, you should try being 6'5".
Thank goodness for XLL BDUs and knee high boots.
REally, jeans? Long jeans are that hard to find in womens cuts?
Maybe it's a guy thing but I'm 6, 7" and have no problem with jeans, and dressier pant are even easier.
I buy them "unhemmed" and get a local artiste with a sewing machine to cut and sew them up them right, a little pricier than off the rack, but not much.
Tam,
I will be driving through your area this weekend. What is the name of the store and what are the hours? TIA
My wife is 5'11" and she just buys Rockies jeans. Probably not a good choice if you are not of the cowgirl-ish style though. They look funny when she wears her slipon work shoes with them....
Walking around Singapore yesterday (back again...) I am always shocked at how short everyone is. Shanghi is even more uniform.
When you are a 6' 5" American walking the back streets with 4' 8" "natives" it is interesting just seeing the sea of humanity and black hair.
My sister (6' 2") shares your complaint though. Very hard to find stuff "off the rack" most of the time.
"I will be driving through your area this weekend. What is the name of the store and what are the hours? TIA"
Uh, well, actually I'm kind of vague about that in public for a reason. More than one, actually.
I solve that problem by wearing t-shirts, shorts and sandals. And a hat - I get a lot of sh over my hats, but it is Florida - hat and sunglasses are de rigueur.
One of the sadder sights for me over the years was when I realized that some tall females were standing and walking with bowed head and hunched over shoulders to try to appear shorter. Very dismaying, and unattractive. I've always thought guys that ignored taller girls were stupid. 'course, when some tall girls did the reverse to me, it was annoying!
