...is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
Time and again, gun registration schemes lead to massive non-compliance, are ignored by criminals, and eventually turn into a handy checklist for confiscating authorities to come by and pick up the guns.
Every time a registration scheme is proposed, gun owners point this out and get derided as tin-foil-beanie-wearing yayhoos, and every time it keeps happening just like it did before.
It is an easily demonstrable fact that gun registration does nothing... indeed can do nothing... to prevent crimes: I will write my name and address and the serial number of a gun on this sheet of paper and hand it to you. Then I will leave the room. Using that piece of paper and nothing but that piece of paper, stop me from shooting something with the gun. I'll bet you twenty bucks you can't.
The only way you can use that sheet of paper to stop me from shooting something is to hand it to another person with a gun and tell them to come get mine.
And maybe that's what you wanted all along, right?

You got it square. They will never do their own dirty work as it allows them to keep believing in Unicorns.
Or they're just stupid. I can't make up my mind.
"And maybe that's what you wanted all along, right?"
Ain't NO "maybe" bout it...
What's worse is despite the mathematics of confiscation which you have discussed here at VFTP. There is still a more than insignificant number of the anti crowd itching to try it.
What Anonymous said. Except it's amazing that so many stupid people exist.
No fair using logic and reason. That's considered a "hate crime" by collectivists.
FTA "If you're not a law abiding citizen, then you're not a law abiding citizen."
Thank you, Captain Tautology! Whatever would we do without you!
:-D
Not a law-abiding citizen?
No problem! I can make you one.
anon: They aren't stupid.
They know this doesn't work, except as a confiscation tool. The only stupid here is thinking we are all stupid fudds who will continue to buy this crime prevention lie.
B-b-b-but registration is SOMETHING. Don't you want to do SOMETHING to protect the children?
They sell these precursors to confiscation not because they will be effective to stop crime, but because they're another slice of the cake (to use LawDog's analogy)- an important one to taking the rest of it away. They offer it as something to be done... since it's another restriction and one that doesn't itself prohibit, there are those who will find it to be a reasonable compromise. They aren't looking down the road at where it leads, nor are they thinking critically about whether this SOMETHING is effective by itself.
But we know this. The trick is convincing the fence-sitters of it.
I don't know what's more insane, them doing it or people letting them do it again.
Good thing their getting those thutty-thutty killing machines off the streets. They were probably RACIST! or something anyway.
Ten ring, Tam.
You're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't.
The government we deserve. Or so I'm told.
Oh, and if you're not a law abiding governor, then you're not a law abiding governor.
Two can tautology...
Seems to me that there is this law about rights and guns and such...
Sorry - one more thing:
Proves a point I've been making all along to anyone that afraid the government is going to go door to door confiscating.
Such a thing would not be possible, or plausible. California got less than a quarter of their assault weapons on the list. So you don't know where 75% of them even are. That's california, for crap's sake.
THe 25% you DO know where they are?
Hell, if even one half of one percent of those folks decide that they're going to give their guns up one bullet at a time, you'd have a bloodbath the likes of which this country hadn't seen since the 1860s. And in spite of all of it, you'd still have 75% of the guns still out there.
It is an impossibility. As is any attempt to "control" guns in this country.
The sooner we can wrap our minds around the fact that bad guys are going to have guns and use them, and that we're better off preparing for THAT rather than trying to take the guns away, the sooner these school shootings and so forth will end. Think Arapahoe - Good guy showed up in 80 seconds with a gun of his own. Bad guy lost. He didn't get hte news coverage, and therefore, will likely not be the inspiration for hte next gooner who wants to make himself famous by killing kids.
It is something. The Supreme court has ruled you cannot make a convicted criminal register a firearm. It violates their rights against self incrimination. Chicago specifically exempts any convicted felon from registering their guns. Something different.
Happy New Year everyone.
Confiscation, an undocumented feature, not a bug.
Additionally,if you can legally hassle and impede people you don't like, it makes you a winner. Just look at the idiocy erupting over e-cigarettes.
Actually, by the logic of the convicted felon/registration paradox, on Jan 1, everyone that still has an unregistered 'Assault Weapon' is exempt from the registry. After all, its a felony to possess an unregistered Assault Weapon, meaning we'd all have a Fifth Amendment protection against admitting it. Of course, we aren't vicious criminals, nor do we vote Democrat, so good luck getting it thrown out.
Some local lawmakers in New Jersey were caught on open mike recently, saying, among other things, "confiscate, confiscate, confiscate".
But that's the People's Republik of New Jersey.
Insanity is an layman's term which can refer to a multitude of different mental illnesses. None of them are diagnosed by watching someone do "the same thing over and over and expecting different results."
Al,
Have I told you my Indian name?
