And then there was the time that we almost nuked North Cackalacky.
Generally, nuking your own country would be considered a bad thing, but I know people who probably think that four megatons would be an effective urban renewal program for RDU or Moscow-on-the-Catawba.

Give me time to finish the bunker!
Al
Nuke The Moon showed the strategy, and dropping it on the Massachusetts of Dixie is as good as anywhere.
Never heard the expression "Moscow on the Catawba" before, but that's about dead on.
I'm thinking that if the Air Force "accidentally" dropped one on Southern California or Massachusetts tomorrow, I could probably not be too upset. But that's just me.
It's closer to Detroit-On-The-Catawba these days. I think we've seen our last mayor of the saltine persuasion, IYKWIMAITYD. ;-)
Give us a little time before you start in on lobbing the nukes. We're working on fixing things down here...
Bob,
Does your wife get pissed when you cut the eyeholes in the pillowcases?
Gee. All the safeguards to prevent a nukdet worked.......
Can I vote for DC especially when everyone is there.
There, whoopsie, we get to elect a whole new slate!
But-- but!
But _I_ live in RDU, and I'm the prettiest princess!
I prefer to call it "soviet mecklenburg".

But-- but!
But _I_ live in RDU, and I'm the prettiest princess! This is an outrage!
You're just going to have to take one for the team.
;)
We can be lords of the tar heel wasteland!

Who will become the Tarhumongous?
I've had it with the California of the South, and its intrusive government and busybody anti-self-defense ninnies. I'm leaving North Cackalacky this year, God willing, and moving to a state that truly respects the 2nd Amendment, and the rest of the Bill of Rights.
I moved from Miami to NC in 2000, It was like leaving hell for paradise.
As long as you stay away from Chapel Hill, san fran south and Charlotte, you are in the tall clover. I do get to come to Indy for the 1st time for the FDIC show in April, any good eats by the Convention Center?
No fusion, no foul.
Today we have anti-gun people, then we had anti-nuc people. That is all.
I was two years old and less than 15 miles from the crash site.I understand one of the two bombs is still under ground today. I was working in Goldsboro one day when a drop tank fell off a F4 and bounced through the parking lot and across HWY 70. Stay close to me I'm lucky!
The Radar Navigator stayed with the aircraft long enough to pickle the bombs unarmed to keep them from exploding in a acft fire. He ejected to late and died. Maj Eugene Shelton, God Speed sir.
"Stay close to me I'm lucky!"
Last time someone said that, I was between them and the crap that happened. When I regained conciousness they had the grace to thank me.
Spot the Ivy Mike image in the article!

If you haven't read the investigator's book who FOIA'd that document Tam, you should. Was both the most sobering and the most compelling read of last year for me.
I'm a huge fan of Eric Schlosser now.
It all boils down to this. Just before WW II, F.D.R. called J. Melville Broughton the then Gov. of North Carolina. It seemed that Broughton had been of great service to F.D.R. in the 1940 election and of course F.D.R. wanted to repay the kindness. When asked what he wanted, Broughton said "Military Bases, all you can build" When he heard that, F.D.R. ask, "Don't you think that the people would object?" Broughton replied, "Franklin, there is NO place on earth that falling shrapnel will have less effect than on eastern North Carolina"
Some folks STILL feel that way.....
Ms. Tam - first time commenter here - just wanted to let you know that the site of the crash was close to Goldsboro, NC and Seymour Johnson AFB in the coastal plain some 50 or so miles ESE of Raleigh and RDU, and many miles east of the Catawba, which is in the western part of the state. Keep up the great blog. Best, Redclay7 2/2
