When I was a kid, if you wanted to be an amateur filmmaker, your only choice was to use an actual movie camera that used photographic film (hence why they are still called "filmmakers".)
Special effects available to the armchair auteur in those days were necessarily fairly limited and crude, but oh my how things have changed...
