Overheard in the Office...

Me: "'Ride the pine', sit on the bench. It's a baseball term. I was kinda surprised to have a sports term used in an otherwise nerdly setting..."

RX: "What do you think World of Warcraft is? Sports for nerds."

Me: "You're thinking of roller derby."

RX: "That's sports for fit nerds."

And fantasy baseball/football/whatever is D&D for jocks.

As the quip goes, "Fantasy football is like D+D for the kids who beat up the kids who played D+D."

Huh, I'd've thought that "ride the pine" would be a reference to being run out of town on a rail.

Or Amish "marital aids". . .

That there is funny....I don't care who you are.

I'm still working on how roller derby became nerdly. When I was a kid, only trailer park queens ever admitted to ever having heard of it - and that was only because it was televised.

But 'Amish marital aids' was funny, for the record.

Joel,

...and when I was a kid, you'd never see a doctor or a lawyer on a Harley or hip young Manhattanites drinking PBR. Times change.

And, seriously, dude, of all the people I'd never expect to bust out all classist... ;)

Roller Derby is ladies' professional wrestling on roller skates.

Scott Adams (Basic Instructions) once postulated that everybody is a nerd. Jocks are merely violence nerds.

And redneck nerds join the volunteer fire department.

Damn it... Scott Meyer does Basic Instructions. Jeez, need more caffeine or something.

That stings.

Anyway it's not like I'm knocking it. I'm just saying. Trailer park queens. I know: I was there.

Roller Derby used to be the pro-wrestling gig, in the heady days of pre-SPIKE TNN, but it's not scripted anymore. The current stuff's real as it gets.
