Today In History: Stuff happened.

...that was pretty dull, on the balance. At least, nothing jumped out at me as being particularly funny or snark-worthy.

The Ostrogoths gave up the siege of Rome, allowing Belisarius to send out for pizza to supplement the diet of boiled sandals and rat stew on which he and his men had been subsisting.

FDR told America he was takin' over and so they'd better get used to it, see? in his first "Fireside Chat".

Mauritius achieves independence. Nobody notices for another six months.

NATO got three new members: Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, which confused those of us who grew up during the Cold War a whole lot.

What, zero snark in the Anschluss or the Truman Doctrine?

Tam are you slipping on me?

Bonus word verification "gatici"- italian word used to describe shooting a Beretta whilst holding it sideways all ghetto like.

WTF, the Winter War ended today. That's important!

Unfortunately, it didn't end by Finnish columns entering Leningrad, and triggering a popular uprising that toppled the Stalin regime.

The Czechs and Poles have been better allies than most. The Hungarians have gotten good reports from the guys I know who worked with them.

Maybe they are trying to impress Uncle Sam extra hard, or maybe they know that a strong military tradition is essential to the preservation of freedom, but I'm glad they work with us.

Well, I think the Belisarius event is noteworthy. Though I can't say I'm as much of a fanboy as, say, SM Stirling or David Drake...
