Darnit.

While in K-town, I stopped at the awesome used book Mecca of McKay's. While there, I picked up a copy of War Made New by Max Boot, and I'm now about halfway through it. It's a good read, and dovetails nicely with Victor Davis Hanson's Ripples of Battle, which I'd just finished.

What I'm kicking myself over is the fact that I'd walked past The Savage Wars Of Peace at McKay's dozens of times, and never bought it. Given the wildly polarized reviews, I wanted to see what the fuss was about for myself. We stopped at Half Price Books out in Castleton yesterday, but despite a good military history section, they had bupkis by Boot. Boy, I'm bitter.

I ordered 'Savage Wars of Peace' from ABE books some time ago and got a new copy for a song and a loose promise. Lucky me. Great read and thanks for the heads up on the new book. ABE is worth checking out as I have found new/used/out of print books at reasonable (sometimes giveaway) prices.

Jim is right. Look on ABEbooks. "Savage Wars" is a good historical study.

I've been trying to work my way down in the pile to some VDH lately - the "Carnage and Culture" one you had was awesome.

I'm curious about his less martial stuff- how is "Who Killed Homer?"

Just curious.
Did you read Team Yankee yet?

Just finished, "When the Odds Were Even" by Keith Bonn about the Vosges Mountains Campaign in '44-'45 - very interesting, a different perspective from the first-person stuff I've been reading lately like, "Chippewa Chief in World War II: The Survival Story of Oliver Rasmussen in Japan."

You may want to try HPB at 86th and Ditch, although I don't know that they'd have what you want either. I haven't been in there in ages, but their military history section was always at least as good as Castleton's.

Tam, I've got a copy (somewhere around here...) if you want to borrow it. ABE is good, though, if you want to own it. I've had good luck with them on some obscure stuff. And HPB at 86th & Ditch is always worth a visit. Found a copy of 'The Other Side Of The Mountain' for a few bucks, once - like hen's teeth for a civvie Cold War historian.

Damn, I love McKay's! Since the wreck, I don't get sent to onsites anymore, so I guess I won't be back until the Hoot next year.
Actually, once I get out of this wheelchair (again), I may have to drive over there just to restock the library...

T.Stahl,

"Did you read Team Yankee yet?"

Yup. I read another of Coyle's books, too. I thin it was They Are Soldiers?
