"Carrying a laser down the road that I must travel..."

I have no idea why this one lodged itself in my ear tonight. I guess I must have heard a snippet of it somewhere in my daily travels? Anyhow, your daily Eighties:

I totally had this on 45 (ask your parents, kids.) It was on translucent purple vinyl. Swear to Edison.

(EDITED TO ADD: Derp. It was the word "kyriarchy" that did it. Duh.)

Thank you for my RDA of '80s hair products.

I'm only a little embarrassed to admit it, but dang it all, I did love the 80's.

Especially as compared to our current ...

Oh hell, never mind. Just realized I've turned into my father.

Heh. I still sing that as "carry a laser down the road..." My wife usually hits me when she hears me sing it that way. I probably deserve it...my singing is pretty bad.

Gosh, Tam, you must have been like 12 years old in 1985. I'ma dinosaur, by comparison. (In 1985 I was 25, and attending my Officer's Basic Course, at Fort Huachuca.)

The mid-1980s were good times overall. It was still late in the Cold War, but everyone knew the Soviets were on the their last legs...

I was 10 in '85. I still love that song, but I did have it on cassette(ask your parents about that too, kids)
Every now and then I'll still sing that song just because I can ;p

I loved that song, and always thought it was weird to put a church prayer into a hit song. Worked, though.

Anon 10:27, I'm right there with ya.

DanH, I had to explain cassettes (and manual crank car windows) to my 9yo not long ago. Actually, I had to give her a refresher on CDs since most of her music is in MP3 form these days. Oddly enough, she knows what a vinyl record is.

Crap, I was in my 30s... and mostly spent those years in Med and other middle eastern destinations! "Vaguely" remember that one...

I had latin inserted in me from an early age, and when I first heard that phrase I had never heard of lasers.

As an altar boy, especially a young one, you end up with the late masses. the early masses belong to the boys with seniority. Because you aren't allowed to eat anything before mass. So by the 11:00 mass, you were starving and your blood sugar was about to crash.

The song, then as now, brings back memories of being woozy, kneeling as the Kyrie is being recited and trying not to keel over.

That's one of those rare songs I heard in concert before I heard it on the radio.

Mister Mister opened for Phil Collins when his No Jacket Required Tour when it swung through Birmingham, AL in May 1985. I wasn't all that familiar with the band before then.

@Anon at 10:27-- I share your embarrassing taste. Before I ditched XM Radio my receiver spent lots of time on channel 8.

Also interesting: the song has recently been covered by a Contemporary Christian group (not sure which one) is in the playlist of my local Contemporary Christian station.

Og,

"I had latin inserted in me from an early age,"

Odd, what with "kyrie" being Greek, and all.

Tam said...

(...and yes, I know the Greek phrase is parroted in Latin rites.)

Middle English, from Medieval Latin, from Late Latin kyrie eleison, transliteration of Greek kyrie eleēson Lord, have mercy.

had the band been singing kyrie eleēson I would have said Greek. I took Greek in school as well. The pronunciation is different, the band is singing the latin pronunciation.

Open or concealed carry for that laser?

If you're open carrying that laser, can you get a nice holster for it from Dragon Leatherworks?

And what color laser has the most stopping power?

Wow, I didn't realize the bass from my PC speakers was so good.
That video had the glass in my fireplace doors rattling.

Oh and I was 16 when I saw them in concert.

That makes me feel rather old.

God, I miss the '80s. Good times.

It was the longest time before I found out it *wasn't* "carrying a laser". Lasers made sense after all, especially in the darkness of the night:-).

Ah, my generation. Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FoNYWDrVTE)

Saw Ronnie on a retrospective of Carson guests last night, and now this. And I was just turning 30. Mid-80's? Yeah, I miss 'em.

By the time that hit the radio, I had probably sung thousands of Kyries. That song just struck me as be wrong when it came out. I think my 1st reaction was "did they really just sing that?"

Carrying a laser? That's right up there with "The ants are my friends, it's blowin' in the wind", and "Heartbreaker, with your bowling ball".

I miss the 80s. I miss 80's hair styles. Aw, hell, who am I kidding, I miss hair.

Matt G said...

That keyboard player represents the 1980s quite neatly, doesn't he? Popped collar, shirt sleeves rolled back over his rolled-up blazer sleeves, hair constructed into some kind of a sail, and squeezing out oozes of synthesizer moans.

Just watched him again. I swear, he's a narrow black tie and a cheesy laugh away from being Ellis on Die Hard.

At first, I was also all like "boy, I miss the '80s" and then I thought about it and that's when I remembered that, no. No - the 80s were actually the time when the all worst things that ever happened in my life happened.

That's so weird that I didn't remember that right away, though.

Kyrie Eleison - Lord Have Mercy.

And yeah, I sang "Carry a laser" for years before I figured that one out in RCIA class.
