What am I doing up so early?

Half the world is no doubt huddled around their computers wondering what I was doing up and typing before 0500...

Well, maybe not half the world, but at least ten or fifteen percent of the world's population.

Okay, maybe nobody actually noticed at all.

Since I've brought it up, though, I should point out that the smell of hot metal and electrons going places they're not supposed to wafting from the heating registers in the house will snap one alert in the morning better than anything short of a cattle prod. And it seems that when the fan motor in the furnace seizes up, it makes that smell. And when it seizes up, it doesn't do much in the way of moving warm air into the house.

Y'know, they were kind of fuzzy on the whole concept of "insulation" back when they built this house back in the '20s, and brother it is cold outside.

Please hurry, Mr. Heating and A/C dude.

In the day of the boiler and radiator, no one could tell the difference between an uninsulated wall or one with insulaton, not that there were many such houses extant.

Two part, high expansion, low pressure insulation foam would probably work well for retrofitting Roberta's walls for better performance, with cost being the worst side effect. Kinda pricey on the front end.

Probably explains why Grandmother spent her spare time making quilts. Lots of quilts.

I remember when I was a kid (back in the 'day) and they talked about that empty space between the walls WAS the insulation. They actually believed it worked to keep the house warm. That's why so many older homes in Indiana during the winter are colder than h....well, you get the idea.

Years ago I blew a whole bunch of insulation into our walls, but I think I need to do it again as it must have settled. House has a 'chill' this morning what with an outside low of 6 degrees.

All The Best,
