North Korea announced December 29 that it was holding an American who had entered the country illegally from China on Christmas Eve. The news agency did not identify the man, who it said was "now under investigation by a relevant organ."Which made me start giggling as I thought of "He's so ronery!" jokes. I feel bad about this, but only a little.

Does this make me a bad person?
So, any sane American would realize that sneaking into North Korea is a dumb way to spend a vacation, but we have plenty of insane Americans. Well, we currently have two less, but that's not what's funny. What's funny is the way the Norks phrased their announcement:

Given the likely state of NK's prison system, god knows which relevant organ the matter is being probed with.
Nobody goes into North Korea for the fun of it. This guy was probably involved in efforts to help people escape from the most brutally repressive regime on the planet. As such I give him the same respect I have for those who helped Jews escape from the Nazis and those who helped slaves escape from the American south. The consequences of being caught are equally dire.

I'm with fast richard; nobody goes to North Korea for the pristine beaches and duty-free booze. He's either a hero or an idiot -- and you could probably make an argument for either.
A hero is very frequently an idiot that survives. ;)
Exactly, and the Norks may be brutal buffoons, but they're still buffoons.
Keep in mind, he may have entered legally, then the Norks changed their mind about it. The Vice Guide to North Korea demonstates the psychotic nature of the NK government. They had to enter as "tourists"(which they rightfully pointed out that nobody goes to NK for the scenery), They siezed their passports, the cameraman was only allowed a point and shoot, and constantly threatened with arrest. Every second of the day was indoctrination.
